Jacks split a pair of duals

February 2, 2008

South Dakota State, on the strength of five pins, recorded its first dual win of the season, 36-15, over Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Frost Arena.

Later in the day, the Jacks dropped a 26-16 dual to Wyoming during Western Wrestling Conference action.

Against Dakota Wesleyan, the Jacks came out on fire, with Tyler Sorenson and Jeremy Swier getting early pins to make it 12-0.

After recording a takedown and a near fall, Sorenson was able to pin Dakota Wesleyan’s Blake Hodne in 1 minute, 49 seconds during the 184-pound match.

In the 197-pound bout, Swier and the Tigers’ Kyle Henderson were deadlocked in a scoreless tie, until Swier made a move midway through the second period and pinned Henderson in a time of 4:01.

Adam Everson (141 pounds), Weston Blasius (157) and Justin Retallic (174) also had pins for the Jackrabbits.

DWU benefited from a couple open weight classes – heavyweight and 125 pounds – to get two forfeit wins and tie the dual score at 12-12. But, the Jacks dominated after that.

SDSU’s Derek Pirner earned a 4-1 decision over Jordan Harer at 133 pounds. Pirner led 2-0 after an early takedown and kept that advantage until recording another takedown with 32 seconds remaining in the final period.

At 141, Everson came out in a hurry, getting a takedown and a three-point near fall in the first 40 seconds, before pinning DWU’s Brad Lore in 1:29. That put SDSU up 21-12.

DWU got within 21-15 after Billy Murtha’s 3-2 decision over Marc Wermersen in the 149-pound match.

Blasius came up next for the Jacks and pinned Laird Klippenstein in a time of 5:58. Blasius controlled the bout, taking a 7-0 lead after a period. After a scoreless second, Blasius recorded two third-period takedowns before getting the fall.

At 165, South Dakota State’s Ryan Meyer picked up a 9-3 decision over Dakota Wesleyan’s Tony Duarte. Meyer had a late takedown in the first period and then held a 4-1 advantage after two periods. Meyer’s win put the Jacks up 30-15.

Retallic closed out the Jacks’ first dual win of the season with another fall. The junior pinned DWU’s Tanner LaValliere in 2:40 in the 174-pound match. That provided for the final margin of 36-15.

In the evening match versus the Cowboys, the Jacks overcame a couple early forfeits and led 16-12 after Everson’s major decision. However, Wyoming went on to win the last four matches to claim their first conference victory of the season.

The dual started with a forfeit win for SDSU’s Sorenson.

Swier then won an entertaining 197-pound match. He and Wyoming’s Dan Barrone were in a close battle, and Barrone forced overtime after holding a 2-minute riding time advantage.

In the overtime, Swier came up with a big takedown with 33 seconds remaining to record a 4-2 decision and put the Jacks up 9-0.

Wyoming then won the heavyweight and 125-pound matches via forfeits to take a 12-9 lead.

But, SDSU bounced back with another overtime victory at 133 pounds. Wyoming’s Cory VomBaur led the Jacks’ Nick Kulseth at the end of regulation, but Kulseth held a 1:19 riding time advantage to force overtime.

In overtime, Kulseth sealed the victory with a takedown right before the buzzer sounded. He won 3-1.

The Jacks later went up 16-12 when Everson posted a major decision over UW’s Brandon Gifford at 141 pounds. Evenson had a pair of takedowns in the first period to take a 4-1 lead, and he was never threatened after that.

Wyoming’s Carter Downing, who is ranked 15th in the nation at 141 pounds, moved up a weight class and posted a technical fall over SDSU’s Marc Wermersen. He won 17-0 in a match that lasted 2:22. The tech. fall put the Cowboys up 17-16.

At 157, Wyoming’s Cole Dallaserra beat Blasius 5-1. Cowboy Eric Coxbill then beat Meyer 3-1 to put Wyoming up 23-16. Kyle Morrow closed out the dual with a 6-2 win over State’s Retallic.

South Dakota State (1-7, 0-4 WWC) heads to Cedar Falls, Iowa, for a dual against Northern Iowa on Feb. 10 at noon.
