MOORHEAD, Minn. -- A season of dual meet firsts continued for Concordia
on Sunday against Southwest Minnesota State. Four days after beating
nationally-ranked St. John's for the first time since 1988-89, the
Cobbers cruised to a 46-3 win over the Mustangs to earn their first win
over SWMS in program history. Concordia had been 0-6 against the
Mustangs prior to the win.
The victory evens the Cobbers' dual-meet record at 3-3 for the season.
Southwest Minnesota State remains winless on the season and falls to
0-6 in dual meets.
In the match, the Cobbers won two bouts by pin fall and two others by
technical fall. Three of the four dominant performances for CC came
from the team's top wrestlers.
Junior Tony Neumann scored a technical fall (19-3) over Cody Chamblin
at 197 to earn his 25th win of the season. He becomes the fourth member
of the Cobbers to win at least 25 matches on the year. It is the first
time since the 1989-90 season that CC has had four wrestlers crack the
25-win barrier. Last year they only had one wrestler with at least 25
victories.
Phil Moenkedick continued his outstanding freshman season. He recorded
the quickest pin fall of the match when he beat Greg Frank at 174 just
1:52 into the match. Moenkedick ups his team-leading winning percentage
to .871 as he moves to 27-4.
The third member of the 25-win club to post a victory on Sunday was
Lane Lunde. Lunde also recorded the only other pin fall in the match.
He took down Luke Giese at 6:11 of the 165-lb match.
Other non-forfeit winners for the Cobbers included Ben Anderson, Joe
Leacox and Logan Lunde. Logan Lunde won by technical fall (17-0) in his
match at 157 over Logan McAlpin, while Anderson claimed the closest win
of the afternoon for CC with his 8-4 decision at 141.
The closest match of the day came in the Mustang's only win. Tyler
Johnson claimed his team-leading 23rd win of the season for SWMS when
he scored an 8-6 victory over Cody Salo at 184.
Concordia will have their third straight dual meet when they match up
against Jamestown College on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. in Jamestown.
The Jimmies are currently 4-3 in dual meets on the season.
