CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa won the final nine matches to defeat South Dakota State, 42-3, in Western Wrestling Conference action Sunday afternoon at the McLeod Center.
UNI, which was receiving votes in this week's national poll, improved
to 5-5-1 overall and 3-0 in the WWC. The Jackrabbits dropped to 1-8
overall, 0-5 in conference duals.
The dual started out well for the Jackrabbits as 184-pounder Tyler
Sorenson earned a 7-6 decision over Andy O'Loughlin. The sophomore from
Garretson used a riding-time advantage to pull out the victory and
improve to 7-1 on the season.
From there, UNI controlled the dual. The Panthers sandwiched wins by
forfeit at 197 pounds and 125 pounds around a technical fall victory by
Dustin Bauman at heavyweight over Jeremy Swier, who was wrestling up a
weight class for SDSU.
UNI later received pins from Charlie Ettelson at 149 pounds and 174-pounder Alex Dolly.
SDSU closes out the dual season with a weekend homestand at Frost
Arena. The Jackrabbits will host Portland State (Ore.) on Friday, then
meet WWC rival Air Force on Saturday. Start time each night is 7 p.m.
