Marshall, MN: Southwest Minnesota State
lost a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual on Wednesday
evening, 46-0 to No. 20 Northern State in the P.E. Gym on the campus of
SMSU. The loss drops the Mustangs to 0-9 overall and 0-3 in the
NSIC, while NSU improves to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in the NSIC.
Things did not start off well for the Mustangs as they lost the first
three matches by major decision, fall and forfeit. After a 10-3
decision for Northern’s Dustin Bonn at 157 to make the score 19-0, C.D.
Johnson nearly pulled off a victory for the Mustangs. Trailing
7-1 going into the third period, Johnson scored an escape, a takedown
and a three-point nearfall with less than a minute remaining.
However, the Wolves’ Phillip Downs took nearly a minute-and-a-half of
injury time to swing the momentum back and he held on with an escape to
pull off an 8-7 decision.
Greg Frank also put forth a solid effort at 174 for SMSU, losing a 7-6
decision to Donnie Bowden. The senior led 5-3 after two periods,
but allowed an escape and a takedown in the third period, and gave up
1:51 of riding time.
SMSU hosts No. 1 Minnesota State, Mankato on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m.
