North Dakota State Thunders Past Portland State 47-0

Saturday, February 16, 2008

FARGO, ND – After a nailbiting finish against the Air Force Academy the night before, North Dakota State made sure the final outcome against Portland State was never in doubt as NDSU shut out the Vikings 47-0 on Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Bison Sports Arena.  North Dakota State won its fourth straight dual meet, and sixth in its last seven outings, to improve to 11-8 on the season.

Redshirt freshman Kenny Moenkedick and freshman Tyler Hemmesch led the way for North Dakota State with each recording a pin on the evening.  Moenkedick took down Jacob Antoine at the 1:39 mark at 184, while Hemmesch earned his team-leading 10th pin of the season at the 1:12 mark against heavyweight Zack Smith.   Redshirt freshman Vince Salminen wasted little time against Jordan Toney at 165, earning a 15-0 technical fall three seconds into the second period.

Three other Bison wrestlers recorded major decisions as junior Gabriel Mooney defeated Camrun Arkills 13-3 at 141, junior Adam Aho bested Steven Dailey 13-2 at 157 to earn his team-best 23rd victory of the year and junior Jacob Bryce took the 197 class with a 12-4 win over Jake Schneider.  Sophomore Ryan Adams (149) and freshman Shannon Fettig (174) also earned decisions to help lead North Dakota State to the shutout victory.

It was Senior Night for the Bison wrestlers, yet ironically none of the three seniors honored spent much time on the mat.  Eric Hoffman and Eric Sanders both recorded forfeit victories against the Vikings, while Matt Wetterling was kept out of the meet recovering from a knee injury sustained last month.

The blanking of Portland State (1-12, 0-8 Pac-10) is the second shutout of the season for NDSU after defeating Southern Illinois-Edwardsville 51-0 at the Northwestern Duals on Dec. 8.  It is the first home shutout since blanking Utah Valley State 46-0 last season.

North Dakota State now prepares for the regular season finale on Sunday, Feb. 24, when the Bison travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to take on defending Western Wrestling Conference champion Northern Iowa.  The meet against the Panthers is scheduled to take place at 12 p.m.
