Sioux Falls, SD -- On Senior Night, the Augustana wrestling
team got big performances from its 2 seniors - Beau Severtson and Aaron
Haddorff as the Vikings knocked off No. 20 Northern State 21-12
Saturday night at the Elmen Center.
The Vikings spotted Northern State the first 9 points of the dual. But
Severtson stopped NSU's momentum. Severtson, ranked No. 7 in the nation
at 184 pounds, scored a tough 4-2 decision over NSU's Cale Cornemann.
Severtson trailed 1-0 going into the final period. He gained a reversal
with 1:42 left in the match to take a 2-1 lead. He then was awarded
another point when Cornemann was called for stalling for the second
time in the match. Cornemann got an escape with 7 seconds left, but it
wasn't enough as Severtson gained an additional point for riding time
to earn the 2-point win.
Severtson's win ignited the Vikings as they won 7 of the last 8
matches. Ty Copsey, ranked No. 4 at 197 pounds held off NSU's Todd
Naasz for a 2-1 win. Each wrestler earned a point for escapes from the
down position. However, Copsey was able to get his escape just 5
seconds into the second period, while Naasz got his with 55 seconds
left in the third period. During that time, Copsey accumulated exactly
1 minute of riding time for the match-winning point.
At heavyweight, Augie's Lance Peters and Jared Little locked up in a
scoreless match until the final period. With Little in the down
position, Peters managed a 3-point near fall with 1:04 left in the
match. Little finally escaped with 13 seconds left, but Peters
registered the 4-1 win with a point for riding time. That win knotted
the dual at 9-9.
Northern State regained the lead when Corbin Surat edged Augie's Al Meger 6-3, but the Vikings won the final 4 matches.
Jason Jeremiason tied the dual with a 10-3 win over NSU's Rick Schiley
at 133 pounds. Augie's Jay Sherer followed with a 6-4 decision over
Dave Schiley to give Augustana its first lead of the night at 15-12.
At 149 pounds, Augustana's Mike Long padded the Viking lead with a 10-3
win over Ryan Larsen to increase Augie's advantage to 18-12.
Haddorff, who's missed most of the season due to an injury, capped the
win by defeating Dustin Bonn 7-4. Haddorff led 4-2 going into the final
period. He then increased the lead to 6-2 with his third takedown of
the match with 1:25 left on the clock. Bonn escaped with 50 seconds
left to make it 6-3. Bonn earned another point when Haddorff was called
for stalling, but Haddorff gained that point back with 2:40 of riding
time.
Augustana returns to the mat on Wednesday when the Vikings travel to
Moorhead, Minn., to take on Minnesota State-Moorhead in a 7 p.m. dual.
