Augustana Wrestlers Rout Mary, Fall to No. 5 Nebraska-Kearney

The Augustana wrestling team
concluded the regular season by splitting a pair of duals against Mary
and Nebraska-Kearney. The Vikings routed Mary 41-6 before falling to
fifth-ranked UNK 38-3.
In the other dual, Nebraska-Kearney easily defeated Mary 46-6.
The Vikings dominated Mary in the first dual of the triangular, winning the first 9 matches.
Augustana recorded 2 pins in the dual. At 133 pounds, Jason Jeremiason
pinned Cody Schmidt in 3:55 after he had built a 10-2 lead in the
second period.
At 174 pounds, Andrew Sorenson pinned Nick Lopez in a unique fashion.
Leading 3-1 with the second period winding down, were locked up on the
mat in the neutral position. But during the action, Sorenson was able
to roll Lopez onto his back and register the fall.
Matt Morris turned in an impressive performance at 165 pounds. Morris
used 3 takedowns and 7 points worth of back points in gaining a 15-0
techical fall over Lance Piatz.
The most exciting match of the dual came at 149 pounds where
Augustana's Aaron Hadddorff rallied for an 11-10 victory. Haddorff
twice was taken down to his back and trailed 9-3 midway through the
second period. But Haddorff cut the lead in half with an escape and
takedown in the final 1:26 of the period to trail 9-6.
Haddorff then chose the down position and quickly escpaped to make the
score 9-7. He tied the match at 9-9 with a takedown at 1:17, but Nagel
escaped 4 seconds later to regain a 10-9 lead. Haddorff then recorded
the winning takedown with just 2 seconds left in the match.
Three other Vikings won by decision. Mike Long downed Shawn Sneva 7-3,
while Beau Severtson, ranked No. 8 at 184 pounds edged Kurt Wiedrich
8-5. Finally, Ty Copsey, rated fourth at 197 pounds, gained an 8-4 win
over Dusty Vliem.
Augie's other wins came via forfeits at 125 and 141 pounds.
Copsey was the only Viking to record a win against Nebraska-Kearney, defeating Derek Ross 3-1 in overtime.
Each wrestler scored escapes from the down position in the second and
third periods. In the 1-minute overtime period, Copsey recorded a
takedown with 16 seconds left to earn the win.
Two other Vikings came up short in close matches. At 125 pounds, Meger
fell 6-4 to UNK's Mike Abril when Abril got a takedown with 11 seconds
left in the match.
At 141 pounds, Sherer dropped a 3-2 decision to third-ranked Jeff
Rutledge. The score was tied 2-2 after 2 periods, but Rutledge got an
escape from the down position early in the third period. He then was
able to fight off numerous of Sherer's takedown attempts to hold on for
the 1-point win.
Augustana will now be off until next Sunday, March 2, when the Vikings
compete in the North Regional Championships in Mankato, Minn.
