Two Augustana Wrestlers Advance to Final Day of NCAA Championships

Ty Copsey and Mike Long have advanced to the second day of the NCAA
Division II Wrestling Championships Friday in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Five
Augie wrestlers began the day at the competition.
At 149 pounds, Long defeated Marcus Gordon of Ashland University, 5-4,
to advance to the quarterfinals. After being pinned by Joseph Deaguero
of Adams State in 1:36, Long kept himself alive in the tournament and
earned all-American honors by defeating Kayne Melko of West Liberty
State, 8-4. Long will compete Saturday versus Ryan Etherton of
Nebraska-Kearney in the third round of wrestlebacks.
At 197 pounds, Copsey defeated Mitch Knapp of West Liberty State, 7-4,
to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinal match, Copsey
defeated Derek Ross of Nebraska-Kearney, 6-5, and earned all-American
honors by advancing to the semifinal round. Copsey will wrestle Donovan
McMahill of Western State Saturday for a spot in the championship match.
At 133 pounds, Jason Jeremiason lost his initial match to Jesse Cruz of
Western State when he was pinned in 2:48. In his first wrestleback, he
pinned Corey Bowers of Gannon University in 4:11, but then was defeated
by Andrew Young of Newberry College, 5-2, to end his championship run.
