The Guillotine Tournament Notes

Session 1 - Thursday 11:00 am

NCAA Division I Championships 1

The first action of the tournament for the Gophers is Justin Bronson vs Richard Starks of Army at 197 pounds in the pigtails. Two escapes for Bronson and a reversal for Starks knotted the score at 2-2 at the end of regulation. In the first :30 overtime Starks got an escape and a last second takedown which was enough for a 5-3 win.

Eric Hoffman of NDSU picked up a 14-6 major decision against Joey Fio of Oklahoma in their first round 125-pound match.

Only four wrestlers enter the tournament undefeated on the season -- Chad Mendes of Cal Poly (26-0 at 141), Keith Gavin of Pittsburgh (25-0 at 174), Jake Varner of Iowa State (25-0 at 184), and Josh Glenn of American (15-0 at 197).

5th seed Charlie Falk of Iowa defeated Fernando Martinez of Army 11-7 at 125 pounds.

2nd seed Jayson Ness got a first period pin (half nelson at 1:17) against Marcos Orozco of UC Davis at 125 pounds.

8th seed Mack Reiter also got a first period pin (cradle at 2:13) against Jeffrey Schell of Brown at 133 pounds.

Manuel Rivera, seeded 5th, added more bonus points for the Gophers with a 15-1 tech fall over Torsten Gillespie of Edinboro at 141 pounds. Rivera led 10-0 after the first period.

Iowa's 8th seeded Dan Leclere lost in the first round to unseeded Zach Bailey of Oklahoma 8-7 at 141 pounds.

Unseeded Ryan Adams of NDSU could not generate much offense against #5 Josh Churella of Michigan in their 149-pound first round match. Churella defeated Adams 11-2.

Dustin Schlatter, seeded #2, got two takedowns in his 5-3 win against unseeded Adam Hall of Boise State at 149 pounds.

5th seed C.P. Schlatter got a takedown with :10 left in the first period against unseeded Tyson Reiner of Northern Iowa at 157 pounds. Reiner got a last-second escape at the end of the second period allthough it appeared that Schlatter had Reiner's ankle and there was no separation. In the third period Schlatter was awarded a point for pushing out (makeup call?). An escape for Schlatter and a stall point for Reiner, left the final score in favor of Schlatter 4-2. Schlatter did not seem to be suffering from injury at all.

Unseeded Nathan Lee of Boise State locked up a cradle in the sudden victory overtime period against 8th seed Gabriel Dretsch to win 3-1 at 174 punds.

Now up -- #8 Roger Kish with a heavily wrapped shoulder against unseeded Josh Edmondson of Chattanooga at 184 pounds. Kish gave up the first takedown but came back with an escape and a spin-around takedown to lead 3-2 after the first period. Kish added an escape to start the second period. Kish led 4-2 to start the third. Edmondson with an escape. Kish added a takedown in the third for a 6-3 win. Other than a brief time-out, Kish did not appear to be too bothered by his injuries.

Unseeded Jacob Bryce of NDSU only lasted :25 against #6 Dallas Herbst of Wisconsin. Herbst with the fall at 197 pounds in the first round.

Ben Berhow kept it close against #9 Jermail Porter of Kent State, but came up short in the first round heavyweight match. Porter prevailed 8-6.

#6 Kyle Massey of Wisconsin picked up a 3-1 win over Rashad Goff of Cleveland State at heavyweight.

Unseeded John May of Nebraska was pinned at 5:22 by #3 Ed Prendergast of Navy at heavyweight.

Session 2 - Thursday 6:30 pm

NCAA Division I Championships 2

Unseeded Justin Bronson was eliminated from competition, losing 12-4 to Jared Villers of West Virginia at 197 pounds.

Eric Hoffman of NDSU lost 6-3 to #1 Angel Escobedo of Indiana at 125 pounds.

#5 Charlie Falk of Iowa defeated Mark McNight of Penn State 5-2 at 125 pounds.

#2 Jayson Ness dominated unseeded Luke Smith of Central Michigan 9-0 at 125 pounds.

#8 Mack Reiter gave up the first takedown but came back to get a 15-6 major decision against unseeded Conor Beebe of Central Michigan.

#5 Manuel Rivera also gave up the first takedown but battled back for a 8-5 decision over #12 Garrett Scott of Penn State at 141 pounds.

At 133 pounds, Unseeded Reece Humphrey of Ohio State took #1 Franklin Gomez of Michigan State into the third tie-breaker overtime period but Gomez's four-second riding-time advantage was the difference.

#2 Dustin Schlatter picked up two takedowns, an escape, and riding time in his win over Mitch Mueller of Iowa State at 149 pounds.

#12 Josh Zupanic of Stanford got a third period escape leaving himself a few seconds over a minute of riding-time, which was enough to defeat #5 C.P. Schlatter 5-4 at 157 pounds.

#8 Roger Kish got a second period takedown and a third period reversal in his 4-0 win over unseeded A.J. Kissel of Purdue at 184 pounds.

#6 heavyweight Kyle Massey of Wisconsin tied the match at 3-3 with a takedown at :03 left in the second period against #11 Michael Spaid of Bloomsburg. Massey added an escape in the third period which was enough for a 4-3 win.

#8 seed Dan Leclere of Iowa was defeated by unseeded Chris Drouin of Arizona State 13-7 at 141 pounds and was eliminated from competition.

Unseeded Ryan Adams of NDSU was pinned by unseeded Joshua Wagner of Missouri in the first period at 149 pounds and was eliminated from competition.

#8 Gabriel Dretsch scored two escapes, a second period takedown, and riding time to secure a 5-3 win over unseeded Scott Giffin of Penn at 174 pounds.

Unseeded Lamar Brown of Rutgers ended the tournament for unseeded Jacob Bryce of NDSU with a 11-5 win at 197 pounds.

Unseeded Ben Berhow got two second period takedowns and two third period takedowns in his 10-7 win over unseeded Nathan Tobaben of Army at heavyweight.

Unseeded John May of Nebraska got a 12-2 major decision against unseeded Andrew Totusek of Old Dominion at heavyweight.

Session 3 - Friday 10:00 am

NCAA Division I Championships 3

Championship Quarterfinals

#2 Jayson Ness pinned #10 James Nicholson of Old Dominion with a half-nelson at 4:04 at 125 pounds. He was up 9-1 at the time.

#5 Charlie Falk of Iowa defeated #4 Tanner Gardner of Stanford 5-4 on 1:08 riding time at 125 pounds.

#1 Franklin Gomez of Michigan State scored two takedowns in a 5-3 win against #8 Mack Reiter at 133 pounds.

#4 Nathan Morgan of Oklahoma State had three takedowns and almost 3:00 of riding time against #5 Manuel Rivera. Morgan won the 141 pound quarterfinal 8-1.

#7 Darrion Caldwell of North Carolina State got a quick first period takedown and built over 2:00 of riding time against #2 Dustin Schlatter in the 149 pound quarterfinal. Each wrestler added escapes and Caldwell came out on top 4-1.

The first #1 seed to go down was Gregor Gillespie of Edinboro at 157 pounds. Gillespie ws defeated 8-6 by #8 Jordan Leen of Cornell in the quarterfinals.

#1 Jake Varner of Iowa State remains undefeated with a 2-0 win over #8 Roger Kish in the 184 pound quarterfinals. After a scoreless first period, Varner got an escape in the second period and rode Kish the entire third period to score a riding time point.

#3 Ed Prendergast of Navy topped #6 Kyle Massey 9-3 in the heavyweight quarterfinals.

Consolations

Unseeded Eric Hoffman of NDSU moves on in the consolations with a 12-6 win over unseeded Javier Maldonado of Chattanooga at 125 pounds.

#5 C.P. Schlatter is eliminated from the tournament at 157 pounds with a 4-0 loss to unseeded Ryan Morningstar of Iowa.

#8 Gabriel Dretsch stays alive in the 174 pound consolations with a 10-2 major decision win over #10 Mike Letts of Maryland. Dretsch scored five points off a headlock in the first period. He added a reversal in the second period and a takedown in the third period.

#9 heavyweight Jermail Porter of Kent State elimnated unseeded John May with a 7-2 decision.

Minnesota freshman heavyweight Ben Berhow was eliminated from competition after a 7-4 loss to unseeded Dustin Rogers of West Virginia.

#9 Rolle Peterkin of Pennsylvania ended the tournament for the Bison with a 3-0 win over unseeded Eric Hoffman of NDSU.

After having a 5-1 lead in the second period, #8 Gabriel Dretsch gave up nine unanswered points to unseeded Alex Dolly of Northern Iowa in a 10-6 loss at 174 pounds. Dretsch is eliminated from competition.

Championship Semifinals

#2 Jayson Ness secured a takedown with :08 left in the match to defeat #3 Paul Donahoe of Nebraska in the semifinals at 125 pounds. Ness will meet #1 Angel Escobedo of Indiana in the finals.

#1 Angel Escobedo of Indiana got a third period takedown and a quick two nearfall to defeat #5 Charlie Falk of Iowa 4-1 in the other 125 pound semifinal.

Jayson Ness says:
What was your mindset during the final moments of your semifinal match?
"You never give up. You never know what's going to happen late in a match. [Donahoe] was tired, I'm tired, but good things are going to happen if you wrestle hard for seven minutes."

How difficult is it to wrestle an opponent several times in a season?
"It's really tough because both guys know what each other is going to do. Every time we wrestle it's going to be a close match. It's always a barn burner with him."

What are your thoughts on your rematch with Indiana's Angel Escobedo in the finals?
"It's going to be a great match. He's a tough competitor. It's just going to be a matter of wrestling hard the whole seven minutes. I'm going to have to really fight to get off of the bottom. I can't let him ride me out all day long."

What is it like being the first wrestler on the mat during the semifinal rounds?
"It's a lot of fun. It's really exciting. It gets your heart going. It gets your adrenaline pumping. Your emotions start running high and it's a really fun experience."
Consolations - winner is guaranteed All-American

#8 Mack Reiter was down 4-2 entering the third period against #10 Pat Castillo of Northern Illinois, but Reiter came back with an escape and a takedown in the third period for 6-5 win at 133 pounds. Reiter will face #5 Nic Fanthorpe of Iowa State in the consolation quarterfinals.

#5 Manuel Rivera jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead with a takedown and two three-point nearfall in the first period against Chris Drouin of Arizona State at 141 pounds. Rivera added another takedown in his 12-1 major decision win. Rivera will meet #9 Nick Gallick of Iowa State in the consolation quarterfinals.

After a scoreless first period, #2 Dustin Schlatter got on the board first with a reversal in the second period against #8 Jake Patacsil of Purdue at 149 pounds. Schlatter added a third period takedown and finished witha 4-1 win. Next up for Schlatter is #3 J.P. O'Connor of Harvard.

#8 Roger Kish gave up three takedowns to #10 Kirk Smith of Boise State in a 8-2 loss at 184 pounds. Kish is eliminated from competition one win away from All-American honors

#6 Kyle Massey of Wisconsin is an All-American at heavyweight with 3-2 win over  #12 Mark Ellis of Missouri. Ellis scored on a reversal and Massey scored on an escape and a reversal.

Consolation Quarterfinals

#8 Mack Reiter defeated #5 Nic Fanthorpe of Iowa State 4-2 at 133 pounds

#9 Nick Gallick of Iowa State had three takedowns against #5 Manuel Rivera in a 8-2 win.

After a tied 2-2 regulation, #3 J.P. O'Connor of Harvard defeated #2 Dustin Schlatter with an escape in the second :30 tiebreaker overtime at 149 pounds.

#7 David Zabriski of Iowa State defeated #6 Kyle Massey of Wisconsin 7-2 at heavyweight

Consolation Semifinals

Mark McKnight of Penn State got a takedown and two nearfall in the first period against #5 Charlie Falk of Iowa at 125 pounds. Falck made a comeback with takedown in the third period, but it wasn't enough. McKnight, a Big Ten wildcard selection, won 7-5. Falck will see #4 Tanner Gardner of Stanford for 5th place.

After a scoreless first two periods, #2 James Kennedy of Illinois got an escape, a takedown, and added riding time in his 4-0 win over #8 Mack Reiter at 133 pounds. Reiter will face #7 Mike Grey of Cornell for 5th place.

The number of Minnesota Gopher All-Americans in the last five years are: 2008 - 4, 2007 - 5, 2006 - 4, 2005 - 4, 2004 - 3. Only three teams had more than four All-Americans this year -- Iowa and Iowa State each with seven, and Nebraska with five. Six other teams had four All-Americans -- Ohio State, Penn State, Central Michigan, Michigan, Oklahoma State, and Cornell.

5th Place Matches

#4 Tanner Gardner of Stanford had two takedowns and a three-point nearfall in his win over #5 Charlie Falk of Iowa at 125 pounds.

#8 Mack Reiter scored three first-period takedowns but #7 Mike Grey of Cornell came back with two of his own in the second period to tie the match at 7-7 going into the third period. Reiter added an escape and a takedown in the third period to go out with a 10-7 win and 5th place.

7th Place Matches

After a scoreless first period, #5 Manuel Rivera got a reversal putting #10 Cody Cleveland of Chattanooga on his back. Rivera kept him there and got the fall at 3:46 for 7th place at 149 pounds.

#2 Dustin Schlatter topped #9 Lance Palmer of Ohio State 3-2 in overtime to place 7th at 149 pounds. The match was tied 1-1 after regulation and the first sudden victory overtime. In the first :30 tiebreaker, Palmer was called for clasped hands giving Schlatter a point. Dustin added an escape with :02 left to take a two-point lead. Palmer got an escape in the next tiebreaker period to make the final 3-2.

#6 Kyle Massey of Wisconsin injury defaulted to #8 Ryan Gritter of Central Michigan in the heavyeight 7th place match.

Championship Finals

125 pounds: #1 Angel Escobedo of Indiana dec. #2 Jayson Ness of Minnesota 10-3
Escobedo got on the board first with a takedown at 2:20. Escobedo was warned for stalling for not bringing Ness to the mat quick enough. Ness escaped. Escobedo led 2-1 after the first period. Ness chose down in the second period and escaped. The second period ended tied 2-2. Escobedo chose downin the third. Ness put a half in and was warned for stalling. Ness cut Escobedo for an escape. Escobedo got a takedown and Ness escaped. Ness tried a desperation throw as time ran down and Escobedo got the takedownand two nearfall. With riding-time, Escobedo wins 10-3.
