SMSU Picked to Finish Seventh in NSIC

MARSHALL, MINN. - The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team is picked to finish seventh in the 2008-09 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestling Preseason Coaches' Poll released Oct. 23. The poll was voted on by the league's eight wrestling coaches.

SMSU received six points in the poll. Points were awarded to the top five individuals in each of the ten weight classes. First place received ten points; second place, seven points; third place, four points; fourth place, two points and fifth place, one point.

Minnesota State, Mankato received four first place votes to grab the No. 1 spot on the preseason poll. MSU Moorhead, Upper Iowa, St. Cloud State and Augustana also received first place votes.

Tyler Johnson, SMSU's lone returning national qualifier, was the highest ranked individual wrestler for the Mustangs as the senior got the nod for the No. 3 spot at 184 pounds. Luke Giese, who finished last season just one win away from qualifying for the national tournament, was the only other Mustang grappler to crack the top five, checking in at No. 5 at 157 pounds.

SMSU opens its season on Nov. 1 when it hosts the Captain Dan Open in Marshall. Start time is slated for 9 a.m.
