SCSU’s Skala Named NSIC Wrestler of the Week

St. Cloud State University sophomore Derek Skala,
a resident of Owatonna and graduate of Owatonna H.S., has been named
the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Week for
Nov. 18.
Skala captured first place at 174-pounds at the Bison Open tournament
on Nov. 15, 2008, in Fargo, N.D. Skala went 5-0 on the day, which
included two major decisions along the way. To start the day, Skala
posted a 13-4 major decision over Lance Piatz of NSIC rival Mary. In
the second round, Skala gained a 9-2 win over Ross Dankers of Concordia
Moorhead, and then defeated NDSU’s Trent Sovde in a 12-3 major decision
win. In the semi’s, Skala collected a 3-2 win over unattached U of
Minnesotan wrestler Kaleb Young. In the title bout, Skala posted a 5-4
win over unattached U of Minnesota wrestler Cody Yohn. Skala is now 5-0
on the season for the Huskies.
SCSU will continue its season on Nov. 22, with a trip to the Cobber Open in Moorhead, Minn.
