Husky Wrestling Crowns Five Champs at Cobber Open

November 22, 2008

Moorhead, Minn. - St. Cloud State wrestlers Nick Wasche (Cedar / 133 lbs.), Gabe Suarez (Las Vegas, Nev. / 141 lbs.), Jake Roberts (Oakdale / 149 lbs.), John Sundgren (Blaine / 157 lbs.), Mitch Altermatt (Wabasso / 165 lbs.) and Tad Merritt (Canby / 165 lbs.) all wrestled to individual titles at Saturday's Cobber Open in Moorhead.

Merritt and Altermatt shared the title at 165 lbs., as the two did not wrestle in the finals. Merritt moved to 9-1 with a dominating day, as he recorded three pins and a major decision. He now has five victories by fall on the year.

Sundgren was equally impressive, scoring three first period pins and one 14-0 major decision victory on his way to the title. Sundgren now sits at 8-2 on the year with four falls.

Wasche, a senior, went 3-0 on his championship run, including a victory over fellow Husky Adam Helgeson (Sauk Centre) in the title match.

Next on the title list was Suarez, as he went perfect on the day without the courtesy of a first round bye. Suarez won via three decisions and one fall, including a 7-3 triumph over Concordia's Ben Anderson in the championship bout.

149 lbs. went to Roberts, as he navigated unscathed through the largest bracket of the tournament. Perhaps his easiest match came in the championship, as he scored a fall in 1:07 over Husky Joe Andersen (Bemidji).

There were many other stellar individual efforts, as a total of 13 Huskies placed in the top six. Jake Horn (Ephrata, Wash.) led the way with a staggering 7-1 mark, wrestling his way through the consolation bracket to a third place finish.

Other Huskies finishing in the top three included Helgeson, Andersen, Brad Padgett (Buckley, Wash. / 184 lbs.) and Lucas Munkelwitz (Forest Lake, 184 lbs.).

The Huskies will be off next weekend for the Thanksgiving holiday, but will be back in Moorhead on Dec. 6 for the Dragon Open. Matches are scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m.
