Mustangs, Johnsons Have Successful Day at Augusburg

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. - The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team brought home eight place winners from the Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open on Saturday. Of its eight place winners, SMSU had a trio of wrestlers crowned champions in Minneapolis.

Tyler Johnson and C.D. Johnson were crowned co-champions at 184 pounds in the gold division. Both wrestlers went 3-0 on the day to reach the championship bout in the weight class. Tyler Johnson took won a 6-2 decision against Morningside's Joe Locket to reach the title match, while C.D. Johnson, wrestling unattached, defeated Zach Anderson of Morningside to get there.

SMSU had another wrestler place at 184 pounds as Brady Myers grabbed the championship in the weight class in the silver division. Going a perfect 4-0 as an unattached wrestler, Myers took a 6-2 decision from Central College's Nate fell in the championship bout to claim the title.

Ed Reno went 2-1 in the bronze division at 133 pounds to take home a second-place finish. Reno had one win by technical fall and another by fall on the day.

Brandan Schunk took home sixth place honors at 141 pounds in the gold divisioin. Schunk went 1-2, picking up a win over Grandview's Jon Henslee in his second match of the day.

Posting a 1-2 record, Luke Giese secured an eight place finish at 157 pounds in the gold division. The junior took a 5-1 decision from Roger Anderson of St. John's.

Wade Granger split four matches to claim fourth-place honors in the silver division at 157 pounds. His two wins came against Luther's Ryan Bouslog and Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Levi Polus.

Nathan Krekelberg, wrestling unattached, went 2-2 to place fourth in the silver division at 165 pounds. The freshman won a 7-3 decision against John MacCormick of Augsburg and took an 8-5 decision from Adam Klien of Ellsworth Community College.

Carter Ash went 3-1 in the gold division at 285 to grab seventh place. After losing his first match of the day, Ash won three straight bouts, with his biggest winning coming when he took a 13-2 major decision from Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Dan Coughlin.

The Mustangs are back in action on Dec. 12 when they travel to MSU Moorhead for the Dragon Open.
