Concordia at Cobber Open
November 27, 2008
Concordia
hosted the annual Cobber Open last Saturday in Moorhead. The Cobbers
welcomed eight different teams and over a hundred wrestlers to the
invitational. Concordia, St. Cloud State and MSU Moorhead were the
three teams that came away with individual weight class champions. The
Cobbers had three athletes earn individual champions.
For the entire meet Concordia had 16 wrestlers place in the top six of
their weight class. Concordia had at least one wrestler make the top
six in all 10 weight classes.
Cobber sophomore Phil Moenkedick (Perhman, Minn.) continued his quest
to achieve All-America status as he remained unbeaten on the season.
Monekedick was a perfect 3-0 at the Cobber Open to win the 184-lb
weight class. He improved his overall season record to 8-0.
CC All-American Tony Neumann (Willmar, Minn.) also won his weight class
at the Open. He went 3-0 and won the 197-lb weight class. He is now 9-2
on the year and leads the team in victories.
Freshman Daron Hohbein (Mandan, N.D.) carried on his early-season
success. He went 4-0 at 125 to claim the championship. Hohbein's
biggest win of the meet came in the championship match where he scored
a 7-5 decision over Corey Ulmer from MSU Moorhead. That win avenged a
loss that Hohbein suffered against Ulmer in the quarterfinals of the
Bison Open on Nov. 15.
Ben Anderson (So., Frazee, Minn.) and Lane Lunde (Jr., West Fargo,
N.D.) captured runner-up finishes in their weight classes for
Concordia. Anderson lost 7-3 in the title match at 141 and Lunde fell
in the championship bout at 157.
Concordia has a two-week break for the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to action at the Dargon Open on Dec. 6.
