Bison Wrestling 31st at Las Vegas Invitational

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The North Dakota State wrestling
team finished 31st out of 44 teams at the 27th Annual Cliff Keen Las
Vegas Invitational. The University of Nebraska won the tournament for
their second title in four years.
At 125, freshman Trent Sprenkle lost to Purdue’s Akil Eren in a 7-2
decision and then dropped a close 8-7 decision to Montana State’s Cory
Borges. Sprenkle’s overall record is now 1-4. At 133, Tyler Steinwand
also went 0-2 on the day and is now 8-6 overall.
Gabriel Mooney went 2-2 at 141 pounds. After falling to Elijah Nacita
of Cal State Bakersfield in a 15-2 decision, Mooney defeated North
Idaho’s Tim McGoldrick and Cumberland’s Neil Birt in 7-0 decisions.
Mooney then finished his day with a 6-2 decision loss to Col Poly’s
Filip Novachkov.
After dropping his first round match to Grant Daffin of Cornell, 5-3,
junior Ryan Adams reeled off three straight victories in the
consolation bracket at 149 pounds. Adams defeated Antony Priore of
Sacred Heart, 11-3, and then knocked off Cal Davis’ Barrett Abel,
13-11. He followed that with a 6-4 decision over Matt Dunn of Columbia.
Adams’ day ended with a 19-0 major decision loss to Purdue’s Jake
Patacsil.
At 157, sophomore Andrey Patselov was one of only two Bison to win his
first round match, defeating Dustin Bonn of Northern State, 9-3. An
18-5 loss to Jordan Burroughs of Nebraska pushed Patselov to the
consolation bracket where he feel to Joey Wilson of Cal Davis is a
tough-fought 2-1 decision.
Senior Adam Aho went 1-2 at 165 pounds. He dropped a 6-1 decision to
Lehigh’s Mike Galante to start the day, but came back to defeat Cal
Poly’s Joel Shaw by a 7-2 decision. Stephen Crozier of Air Force handed
Aho his second loss in a 6-0 decision.
At 174, sophomore Shannon Fettig pinned Jason Points of Cal State
Bakersfield at the 3:26 mark in his first match. Fettig was then
defeated by Shane Onufer of Wyoming, 13-2. Fettig then defeated Austin
Ovellette of Montana State in a 7-2 decision and then beat Sacred
Heart’s Brandon Lapp, 10-6. He finished the day with a 3-2 record after
falling to Jesse Feinsad in a 15-0 major decision.
Sophomore Kenny Moenkedick saw his unbeaten streak come to an end in
his first match of the day, a 12-3 loss to Lance Bryson of West
Virginia. Moenkedick then defeated Marques Gates of San Francisco State
in a 10-7 decision before falling to Arizona State’s Jake Meredith.
At 197, freshman Drew Ross was pinned in his first match against Utah
Valley’s Adam Fager. Ross then pinned Ryan Van Doren of Embry Riddle at
the 4:58 mark. He then lost an 18-2 major decision to Matt Powless of
Indiana. He finished the day with a 1-2 mark and a 3-3 overall record.
Heavyweight Tyler Hemmesch also went 1-2 on the day, dropping his first
match to Western State’s Charlie Alexander by fall. Hemmesch then
pinned North Idaho’s John Forrester before getting pinned by Cal Davis’
Ricky Alcala.
The Bison host Dickinson State at 1 p.m. and No. 2 Iowa State at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Bison Sports Arena in Fargo.
