SMSU Wrestles at Husky Open Saturday
December 11, 2008
MARSHALL, MINN. - The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling
team travels to St. Cloud State Saturday to take part in the Husky
Open. The tournament will be the last competition for the
Mustangs before the holiday break; they won’t be back in action again
until Jan. 10.
Taking on a powerhouse: SMSU dropped a 41-3 dual contest
to NCAA Division III powerhouse Augsburg on Tuesday. The Auggies,
ranked No. 2 in the country, took all but one bout from the
Mustangs. Garret Rozeboom (Mason, Mich.) was the lone Mustang to
come home with a win as the freshman took a 10-5 decision from Torey
Stewart at 149 pounds.
National news: Tyler Johnson (Harrisburg, S.D.) is ranked
No. 8 at 184 pounds in the latest NCAA Division II national wrestling
rankings released Tuesday, Dec. 9, by the NCAA Division II Wrestling
Coaches Association. Johnson has compiled a record of 13-6 this
season, wrestling 14 matches at 184 pounds and five matches at 197
pounds. The senior was crowned co-champion at the
Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open, took sixth at the Bison Open and was a
third-place finisher at 197 pounds at the Captain Dan Open.
A “Barrie” good performance: Michal Barrie (Westbrook,
Minn.) brought home the best finish from the Dragon Open hosted by
Minnesota State Moorhead last weekend, posting a second-place finish at
133 pounds in the Red Division. Barrie compiled a 2-1 record on
the day, taking a pair of decisions from MSU Moorhead's Kelly Janke and
Augustana's Jason Jeremiason. His only loss of the day came in
the championship bout when he lost a 15-6 major decision to Augsburgs'
Travis Lang.
Other Dragon Open results: In addition to Barrie’s silver
performance, Brady Myers (Redwood Falls, Minn.) and C.D. Johnson
(LeRoy, Mich.) each grabbed third-place finishes at the Dragon Open.
Myers took third at 184 pounds in the White Division, and C.D. Johnson
was third at 184 pounds in the Red Division.
Next dual action? Next year: SMSU won’t hit the mat
in dual action again until Jan. 10, 2009, when the Mustangs travel Mary
to open the conference season. The NSIC contest is slated to
start at 2 p.m.
