MSU Finishes Third at National Duals

Cedar Falls, Iowa -- The Minnesota State wrestling team closed the 2009 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Dual Championships with a third-place finish.
Minnesota State began its day against the top-ranked Nebraska-Omaha in
the semifinals. It was Nebraska-Omaha which MSU defeated last year,
19-17, in the championships of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals.
Minnesota State struggled to find its rhythm against Nebraska-Omaha as
sophomore Andy Forstner (Madelia, Minn.), sophomore Tommy Abbott
(Wilmington, Del.), and junior Brady Wilson (Faribault, Minn.) were the
only Mavericks to earn a victory as Nebraska-Omaha upended MSU, 29-9.
The loss sent Minnesota State to the consolation finals where it faced
third-ranked Nebraska-Kearney. The Mavericks wrestled its way to a
19-16 win over the Lopers.
Forstner, Abbott, and Wilson along with senior John Putman (Oak Lawn,
Ill.), freshman Aaron Norgren (Good Thunder, Minn.), and senior Tom
Block (Waseca, Minn.) were all victorious by decision in their
respective weights. Wilson finished the off the Lopers – and solidified
the Maverick victory - with a 13-1 major decision over Derek Ross.
Minnesota State (4-3) opens the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference
portion of its schedule Friday when it travels to Minnesota State
Moorhead.
