Jackrabbits trounce Northern, 40-3

January 22, 2009

The South Dakota State wrestling team rattled off nine-straight wins en route to a 40-3 victory over Northern State in duals action at Frost Arena Thursday night.

The Jacks, who are wrestling at full strength for the first time this year, recorded a major decision, four wins by fall and four wins by decision on the night.

The newest member of the Jackrabbit wrestling team, sophomore Ryan Baxter from Rapid City, S.D., gave the Jacks an option at the 133-pound weight class for the first time this season, and took care of business. Baxter notched his first win as a Jackrabbit in an energetic match by fall at 1:45.

No. 16 rated (USA Today/Intermat) Tyler Sorenson remained perfect on the season with a win by fall at 3:36.  The 197-pound junior won his second match by fall this season and improves his record to 6-0.

Senior heavyweight Jason Stripling also recorded a win by fall, taking out Northern’s Jared Little at 2:36. Stripling, who leads the teams in wins, improves to 24-9 overall and 12-1 in duals.

Freshman Nick Flynn notched a pin dual against Ryan Larsen at 4:03 in the 149-pound weight class.  Flynn, who also notches his first dual win, ups his record to 1-1 in duals and 8-15 overall.

In the most exciting match of the night, Dustin Walraven recorded a 20-6 major decision over Joe Hirt. The freshman 141 pounder had eight takedowns, a two-point nearfall, an escape and a riding time bonus to round out his night. Walraven is third on the team in wins this season with an 18-12 record and improves to 7-5 in duals.

Also notching victories for the Jacks were seniors Alan Marvin at 125 pounds and Weston Blasius at 157. Freshman Scott Elliott and Zach Blindert also recorded victories at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively. Elliott is second on the team in victories this season with a 22-4 record, including a 6-1 record in duals.

Head coach Jason Liles, who was honored before the match for becoming SDSU’s all-time wins leader, improves the Jacks to 7-5-1 on the season while Northern falls to 3-3.

The Jacks return to the mat Sunday at 2 p.m. when they host Northern Colorado in Western Wrestling Conference action at Frost Arena.
