#11 St. Cloud State Wrestling Defeats UW-EC

Eau Claire, Wis. – St. Cloud State
(3-3) won nine of the 10 matches, including pins from Tad Merritt
(Canby) and Jake Horn (Ephrata, Wash.), to cruise past Wisconsin-Eau
Claire (5-9) 36-6 Saturday afternoon at the McPhee Center.
"It was good for us to bounce back the way we did," said assistant
coach Matt Lowers. "We had some great individual efforts today, and we
hope to carry that over to the upcoming conference season."
The Huskies jumped out to an early 9-0 lead with a 2-0 victory from
Bobby Ross (St. Peter) at heavyweight and a forfeit victory at 125 lbs.
to Pat LeVasseur (Buffalo Lake).
Andy Miller put the BluGolds within striking distance at 9-3, with a
2-0 victory over #8 Josh Williams (Banks, Ore.) at 133 lbs, but that is
as close as they would get.
The Huskies rattled off the next three matches for 14 points and a 23-3
lead. Gabe Suarez (Las Vegas) started the run at 141 lbs. with an 18-2
tech fall victory, followed by a 4-0 Jake Roberts (Jordan) triumph at
149 lbs. Horn then capped off the spurt with his pin over Jon Ames at
the 1:11 mark.
After Chad Kubasch (New Germany) fell at 165 lbs., the Huskies finished
the dual with three victories at 174 lbs., 184 lbs., and 197 lbs. from
Merritt, Brad Padgett (Buckley, Wash.) and Luke Munkelwitz (Forest
Lake).
The Huskies open a stretch of NSIC duals next Friday at Halenbeck Hall
against Northern State, while UW-Eau Claire will take on UW-LaCrosse on
Tuesday. Match time for Prep Night on Friday is 7:00 p.m.
