Cobbers Win Sixth Straight
January 28, 2009
MOORHEAD, Minn. -- In the end the only bit of suspense in Concordia's
sixth straight dual-meet win was whether the Cobbers could finish the
match in less than an hour. No.9-ranked Concordia won eight of their 10
individual matches against Jamestown and cruised to a 40-6 win in
Moorhead on Wednesday.
The Cobbers have now won six straight dual meets since dropping their
opening match of the National Dual Meet to No.4-ranked Coe. Concordia
is now 8-1 on the season which is the best start to a dual-meet season
in program history. CC is now one dual-meet win away from tying the
school record for wins in a season.
Concordia was spotted 18 points to start the match because of forfeits
at 133, 165 and 197. The Cobbers then won the first three contested
matches of the night to take an insurmountable 18-0 lead. Daron Hohbein
led off the match by posting a 6-0 win at 125. He never allowed his
opponent to come close to scoring a point. PJ Mack then gave the crowd
a thrill as he was able to turn Devin DeMaine in the third period and
come away with his second pin of the season. Ben Anderson completed the
trio of wins by claiming a 7-4 decision at 149. It was his team-leading
29th win of the year.
The Jimmies followed that by earning one of their two wins in the
match. In the closest match of the night Marion Branson edged out Zach
Schumach 7-6.
Following the second forfeit, Spencer Lund recorded a 10-0 major
decision at 174. Lund's win made the score 28-3 and set the stage for
the second dramatic moment of the match. Like the team decision,
Concordia sophomore Phil Moenkedick's match was not very suspenseful.
Moenkedick went on the offensive from the opening whistle and got a pin
just 1:50 into the first round. The win kept Moenkedick perfect on the
year and moved his season record to 22-0.
The Cobbers claimed their third forfeit win of the night at 197 and
then the Jimmies' Andrew Hammond finished off the match by coming away
with a 5-2 win at 285.
Concordia will put their six-match winning streak on the line when they
travel to regional rival St. John's on Friday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m.
