JOHNNIES HOST CONCORDIA FRIDAY
The Johnnies host No. 8 Concordia-Moorhead for a 7:30 p.m. dual this Friday, Jan. 30 at Sexton Arena in Collegeville.
SJU STAYS AT NO. 17
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - The Saint John’s University wrestling team was
ranked No. 17 in the latest Brute-Adidas National Wrestling Coaches’
Association (NWCA) Division III team rankings released Jan. 27.
Individually, sophomore Dustin Baxter (17-4 record; Fairbanks,
Alaska/West Valley) is ranked No. 7 at 184 pounds, while junior Mogi
Baatar (17-7 record; Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia/St. Benedict's, N.J.) and
sophomore Matt Baarson (17-7 record; Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin
Park) and are ranked No. 8 at 133 and 157 pounds, respectively. Baatar
won the Jamestown (N.D.) Open last Saturday, Jan. 24, while Baxter
claimed third. Baarson did not compete.
BAATAR, SCHRUPP CLAIM WINS AT JAMESTOWN
JAMESTOWN, N.D. - Six Saint John’s University wrestlers finished in the
top three of their respective weight classes at the Jamestown Open
Saturday, Jan. 24 in Jamestown, N.D. Junior Mogi Baatar (right) and
senior Matt Schrupp (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) won the 133-and
165-pounds brackets, respectively. Senior Grant Eustice (174,
Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) and sophomore Tony Willaert (197, North
Mankato, Minn./Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial) each took second, while
sophomore Dustin Baxter and freshman Cody Socher (285, Delano, Minn.)
claimed third place in their weight classes. Baatar eased his way
through the first three rounds of the 133-pound bracket with a pin and
a 16-1 technical fall in the semifinals. Baatar then defeated
Concordia-Moorhead’s Joe Leacox, 3-2, in the championship match.
Schrupp advanced to the championship round with two decisions before
defeating Montana State University-Northern’s Colter Dimas by major
decision, 11-3. Eustice started the tournament with three consecutive
decisions before falling to Jamestown’s Zach Lee, a current assistant
coach for the Jimmies, via pin in the championship match. Baxter
suffered a pin in the first round but cruised through the consolation
bracket with a major decision and two pins. In the third-place match,
Baxter defeated Montana State University-Northern’s Mark Dennis,
5-1. Willaert advanced to the championship match with a major
decision, pin, and a decision, respectively. Willaert fell to
Concordia’s Tony Neumann in a close match, 9-7, in the finals.
Socher lost to Jamestown’s Stacey Mello 2-1 in the quarterfinals but
battled back with a decision and a pin of Dickinson State’s Cody
Jamgaard to claim third place.
