(5-3, 2-0 NSIC) fast start was too much for Mary (2-8, 0-5 NSIC) to
overcome, as the Huskies recorded their second victory of the weekend
with a 38-13 win over the Marauders Sunday afternoon in Halenbeck Hall.
The victory was the third dual triumph in a row, and fourth in the Huskies’ last five matches.
John Sundgren ( Blaine) took the opening match for the Huskies at 157
lbs., with an 11-3 major decision victory over Taylor Nagel. Sundgren
recorded a takedown with less than 30 seconds remaining in the third
period to get the final two points he needed for the major.
Tad Merritt (Canby) followed Sundgren’s lead with his 15th pin of the
year over Shane Primeau at 165 lbs. Merritt posted his third takedown
of the match and quickly turned Primeau to make it a 10-0 Husky lead.
Derek Skala (Owatonna) wrestled to a 15-5 major decision victory over
Lance Piatz. Skala controlled throughout, jumping to a 6-4 lead after
one.
Mary came back in the next three matches to cut the Husky lead to seven
at 20-13. Lance Piatz started the run by reversing Luke Munkelwitz
(Forest Lake) to record a pin at the 1:18 mark of the 197 lbs. match.
Kevin McCleary controlled the tempo of the 285 lbs. bout, posting a 6-1
decision over Erik Rogness (Buffalo). As the dual turned over to 125
lbs., Dan Sabin continued the Marauder run with an 8-0 major decision
over SCSU’s Pat LaVesseur (Buffalo Lake).
That’s as close as the Marauders would get, as they surrendered
forfeits at 133 and 149 lbs. Gabe Suarez (Las Vegas) was tied at six
with Landon DellaSilva in the final match of the afternoon before an
injury forced a forfeit from DellaSilva providing the final 38-13
margin.
Mary’s next dual will be one week from Tuesday when they travel to
Moorhead to take on the Concordia Cobbers. The Huskies will be on the
road for matches with Augustana and Southwest Minnesota State on Friday
and Saturday. Match times will be at 7:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
respectively.
