Cobbers Snap Losing Streak To Dragons
February 4, 2009
No.8-ranked Concordia
won four of the first five matches against MSU Moorhead and held on to
come away with an 18-15 win over the Dragons in Memorial Auditorium on
Wednesday. The win snaps an 18-match losing streak for the Cobbers
against the Dragons. It has been 20 years since the last time Concordia
beat MSU Moorhead in a dual meet. The last time came in the 1987-88
season.
The win is also the eighth straight for the Cobbers who move to 10-1 on
the season in dual meets. The 10 wins is the second most in program
history - only one behind the 11 wins posted in the 1984-85 season.
Cobber freshman Daron Hohbein set the tone for the whole match when he
overcame a 5-0 deficit in the first period to post a 9-7 win in
overtime. The Dragons' Joe Werner scored a reversal in the final
seconds to take a 7-6 lead but Hohbein had posted enough riding time to
force the extra period. Hohbein wasted little time in the OT period as
he scored the match-winning takedown less than 30 seconds in to the
period.
After Kelly Janke scored a major decision at 133 to give MSU Moorhead
(6-8) their only lead of the night, the Cobbers rattled off three
straight wins to take a 12-4 lead. Ben Anderson started the trio of
wins with a 6-1 win at 141. Justin Berns then followed suit by earning
a 5-1 win at 149. Another swing match of the night came when Lane Lunde
grabbed an early 4-0 lead and went on to win 7-2 at 157. Anderson and
Berns both won their 31st match of the year. Anderson is now 31-8 and
Berns is 31-10. For Lunde it was his 20th win of the season and he
becomes the sixth CC wrestler to win 20 matches on the year.
The Dragons took the next two matches but those were two of the three
bouts that could have sealed the win for CC. At both 157 and 165 MSU
Moorhead was only able to come away with a decision despite having a
decided edge entering the night. Tyler Tubbs scored a 9-5 decision at
165 and then Jarrett Hall claimed a 10-4 win at 174 to bring MSU M
within two points at 12-10.
Concordia sophomore Phil Moenkedick then put on a wrestling clinic at
184. He played cat ans mouse in the first period, allowing his opponent
to get escape after escape while he recorded takedown after takedown.
Moenkedick had enough of the back-and-forth in the second period and
put his foe on his back and claimed the six-point pin at 4:16. For
Moenkedick it was his fourth straight pin and kept his season record
unblemished at 24-0. The six points for CC would prove to be the
difference in the match.
Leading 18-10, the Cobbers dropped another decision at 197 and held an
18-13 lead heading into the final match of the night. The Dragons
needed a pin at 285 in order to come away with the overall team win.
They almost achieved that feat in the first 10 seconds of the match
when Tim Johnson stuck Cobber heavyweight Nick Nadeau on his back and
came within inches of earning the game-winning pin. Nadeau somehow
wriggled out of the near fall and was able to last out the opening
period. Nadeau trailed 5-0 after the first period and then proceeded to
dig deep and only get outscored 8-6 in the final two periods to lose a
13-6 decision and give Concordia the overall team victory.
MSU Moorhead was deducted one point from their team total after the
match for unsportsmanlike conduct to bring the final total to 18-15.
Concordia will compete in the North Country Invite on Saturday, Feb. 7
at 9 p.m. The Cobbers will then finish off their dual-meet season when
they host the University of Mary on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m.
