
Mustangs Host Huskies in Saturday Matinee

MARSHALL, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team hosts No. 11 St. Cloud State on Saturday in a 2 p.m. conference contest.
Last time out: No. 3 Minnesota State, Mankato took two wins by
fall and three by technical fall to hand SMSU a 42-3 conference loss
Jan. 30 in Mankato, Minn. Tyler Johnson (Harrisburg, S.D.) took home
the lone Mustang victory, posting a 7-6 decision over Aaron Norgren at
184 pounds.
Another ranked opponent: It will be SMSU’s third meeting with a
nationally ranked Division II program on Friday. SCSU enters as the No.
11-ranked squad in the country. The Mustangs also met up with Augustana
on Jan. 16, which was ranked No. 18 at the time, and No. 3 Minnesota
State, Mankato on Jan. 30.
The series: The Huskies hold the advantage in the series with
the Mustangs, leading 24-12-1. Last season, SCSU won the match-up
between the two programs 50-0. The last time SMSU posted a win versus
the Huskies was in 2005-06 when the Mustangs picked up a 24-18 victory
in St. Cloud. Head coach Jesse Nelson is 0-1 against the new NSIC team.
Oh snap!: The Mustangs are looking to snap a three-match losing
skid on Saturday. SMSU’s last win was on Jan. 10 when the Mustangs
defeated Mary 24-16 in Bismarck, N.D.
Up next: The Mustangs hit the road to take on Northern State on
Feb. 11. The remainder of SMSU’s duals, excluding a postponed contest
with St. John’s that has yet to be announced, are conference contests.
