UNO tops MSU 17-15

Mankato, Minn. -- In dual action this evening the #3 ranked Minnesota State Mavericks
were defeated by the first-ranked Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks, 17-15.
After the hard fought loss the Mavericks overall record dropped to 9-4,
but MSU still holds a 5-0 record in the NSIC.
Tonight’s meet began with MSU’s eighth-ranked sophomore Andy Forstner
(Madelia, Minn.) taking on Matt Rein in the 125-pound match in which
Forstner defeated Rein by decision, 7-6.
Fourth-ranked senior John Putman (Oak Lawn, Ill.) grappled with #2
ranked Mario Morgan in the 141-pound match and brought the Mavericks
their second victory with a 5-3 win by decision. In the 149-pound match
#2 ranked sophomore Tommy Abbott (Wilmington, Del.) and third ranked
Esai Dominguez took the mat. Abbott got the victory which ended up
being an 8-5 win by decision.
Junior Ben Becker (Fort Dodge, Iowa) met Ryan Pankoke on the mat in
the174-pound match with Becker taking the close win by decision, 5-4.
Sixth-ranked sophomore Pat Mahan (Owatonna, Minn.) grappled with Brent
Pankokein but fell just short with a 3-1 loss by decision.
Second- ranked junior Brady Wilson (Faribault, Minn.) wrestled
third-ranked Tony Lewis in the final match in which Wilson needed a pin
to get the MSU Mavericks a win, but was unable to do so as he won by
decision, 3-1. With the win, Wilson reached win #100. Wilson’s career
record is now 100-19.
The Mavericks next action will be against Northern State, tomorrow night, 4:00 p.m. at the Taylor Center.
