Mavericks Clash with Wolves in Final Home Dual of the Year

Mankato, Minn. -- The third-ranked Minnesota State wrestling
squad closed a four-dual homestand Saturday as it defeated the Northern
State Wolves, 43-3. After the victory, the Mavericks improved to 10-4
which includes a 6-0 record in the NSIC.
The meet began with MSU’s eighth-ranked sophomore Andy Forstner
(Madelia, Minn.) and Corbin Surat taking the mat with Forstner earning
the win by decision, 9-2. Senior 133-pounder Tim Haneberg (Tinley Park,
Ill.) pinned his opponent, Rick Schiley in 1:40. Fourth-ranked senior
John Putman (Oak Lawn, Ill.) grappled with Joe Hirt in the 141-pound
match and defeated Hirt with a tech-fall victory, 5:33 into the match.
In the 149-pound match second-ranked sophomore Tommy Abbott
(Wilmington, Del.) took down Jacob Buterous by tech-fall in a time of
4:22. The 157-pound match was forfeited by Northern State. Senior
165-pounder Tim Matheson (Circle Pines, Minn.) wrestled a tough match
against Phillip Downs and defeated Downs by decision, 8-5.
Junior Ben Becker (Fort Dodge, Iowa) wrestled Donnie Bowdon in the
174-pound match with Bowdon taking the match by decision, 10-8. The
197-pound and 285-pound matches were also forfeited by Northern State.
Minnesota State returns to dual action Feb. 19th against #11 St. Cloud in St. Cloud.
