Bison defeat MSU-Moorhead, fall to Utah Valley

FARGO, N.D. -- The North Dakota State
wrestling team defeated MSU-Moorhead, 22-17, and then dropped a tough
18-15 decision to Western Wrestling Conference foe Utah Valley on
Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Bison Sports Arena. The Bison are now 4-9-1
overall and 1-2 in WWC action.
The Bison led MSU Moorhead from start to finish, but the match against
Utah Valley was a back-and-forth affair that came down to the last bout.
Senior Gabriel Mooney and sophomore Vince Salminen both went 2-0 on the
day to lead the Bison. Mooney won a decision and a technical fall,
while both Salminen’s bouts went to overtime.
North Dakota State 22, MSU-Moorhead 17
Justin Solberg got the match off to a good start for the Bison, winning
a 12-4 major decision over Joe Werner at 125 pounds to give NDSU a 4-0
lead.
Kelly Janke won a 5-3 decision over NDSU’s Trent Sprenkle at 133 pounds
to cut the Bison lead to one. At 141 pounds, Mooney tallied four
near-falls en route to a 19-2 technical fall over Evan Forde to give
the Bison a 9-3 lead.
At 149 pounds, Ryan Adams dropped a 9-6 decision to Derek Bomstad.
At 157, Vince Salminen fought a tough battle with Tallen Wald. With the
score tied at 4-4 going into the third period, Wald earned an escape,
but Salminen forced overtime by getting a point for having a 1 minute
and four seconds of riding time. 22 seconds into sudden victory
overtime, Salminen took down Wald for the 7-5 victory.
NDSU’s Tyler Johnson and MSU Moorhead’s Tyler Tubbs also went to
overtime at 165 pounds. Johnson forced overtime by having over a minute
of riding time. Neither wrestler was able to tally any points in the
first overtime period. After two 30-second tiebreakers in which each
wrestler notched an escape, the match went to a second sudden victory
overtime. With just nine seconds left on the clock, Johnson was able to
get a takedown and the 9-7 win.
Trent Sovde won by forfeit at 174 pounds and that win gave the Bison an 18-9 lead in the match.
At 184 pounds, Kenny Moenkedick won an 11-2 major decision over Dustin
Nagel. Moenkedick tallied three takedowns and a near fall in the win.
The Dragons won both the 197 and heavyweight bouts to close the final gap to 22-17.

Utah Valley 18, North Dakota State 15
Justin Solberg opened the meet against Ben Kjar at 125 pounds. Solberg
took a 5-4 lead into the second period thanks to a two-point near fall
with three seconds left in the period. Kjar responded with a two-point
near fall of his own, but Solberg escaped to tie the match at 6-6 going
into the third. Kjar escaped right away and then notched a takedown to
take a 9-6 lead, but Solberg responded in the final minute with an
escape and takedown to tie the match at 9-9. Despite Solberg’s
comeback, Kjar took the 10-9 win since he held a one minute riding time
advantage.
Flint Ray put Utah Valley up 6-0 after winning a 4-1 decision over
Trent Sprenkle at 133 pounds. Gabriel Mooney then won a 5-2 decision
over Jeff Newby at give the Bison their first points of the match and
close the game to 6-3.
Ryan Adams fought a tough battle against Justin Morrell. With the score
tied at 3-3 after the first period, Morrill earned an escape in the
second to go up 4-3. Adams then was able to reverse positions at the
beginning of the third to take a 5-4 lead, but another escape from
Morrill tied the score. Just like the 125 bout, the 149 match came down
to riding time and Adam’s 1:11 advantage gave him the 6-5 win.
Vince Salminen fell in an early 6-2 hole to Jamison Moss at 157 pounds,
but battled back to close the gap to 7-5 in the second period. Salminen
used a strong third period and three takedowns and two escapes to tie
the match at 13-13. Salminen then was able to take down Moss 17 seconds
into overtime to clinch a hard-fought 15-13 decision in his second
overtime bout of the day and give the Bison their first lead of the
night at 9-6.
At 165 pounds, Tyler Johnson faced off against Jeb Clark. Johnson went
down 8-2 in the second period, but used two takedowns and a three-point
near fall to tie the match at 10-10 going into the third. In the third,
Clark received two stalling warnings, giving Johnson a point with one
second remaining in the match, but Clark held a 1:48 riding time
advantage to force overtime. With 26 seconds left in the sudden victory
overtime, Johnson took down Clark for the 13-11 win and gave the Bison
a 12-6 lead.
Brad Darrington won a 9-2 decision over Trent Sovde at 174 pounds to
close the gap to three points, but Kenny Moenkedick gave the Bison a
six-point cushion again with a 5-4 win over Casen Eldredge at 184
pounds. Moenkedick used a takedown with 29 seconds left in the third to
clinch the victory.
At 197 pounds, the Wolverines’ Adam Fager pinned Drew Ross to tie the
match at 15-15. The match came down to the final heavy weight bout
between Tyler Hemmesch and Diego Avalon. Hemmesch was down 1-0 going
into the second period, but escaped to tie the match at 1 apiece. A
takedown from Avalon made the score 3-1, but another Hemmesch escape
closed the gap to 3-2. Hemmesch was unable to get any good shots on
Avalon as the Wolverines held on for the 18-15 victory over the Bison.
