St. Cloud State Downs Mustang Wrestling

MARSHALL, Minn. - No. 11 St. Cloud State posted three wins by fall to hand the Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team a 40-6 conference loss Saturday afternoon in Marshall.

SCSU improves to 7-3 (4-0 NSIC), while SMSU falls to 2-5 (1-3 NSIC)

Wrestling started at 197 pounds where SCSU got on the board first as Lucas Munkelwitz took a 16-6 decision from SMSU's Ben Derynck.

SMSU's Carter Ash answered for the Mustangs, sneaking by Robert Ross 7-6 in his heavyweight match.

After SMSU left 125 pounds open, the Mustangs' Michal Barrie took down nationally ranked Josh Williams at 133 pounds, grabbing an 11-5 decision.

The Huskies then took control, rattling off wins in the next six bouts, including three by fall at 141 pounds, 165 pounds and 174 pounds.

The Mustangs return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Aberdeen, S.D., to meet conference-foe Northern State. Wrestling begins at 7 p.m.

SCSU will continue its season on Feb. 13, with a 7 p.m. match against Minnesota State Moorhead at Halenbeck Hall.
