Viking Wrestlers Finish Strong to Defeat Northern State 28-21

February 14, 2009

After a rough start, the Augustana wrestling team finished on a strong note as the Vikings defeated in-state rival Northern State 28-21 Saturday night in Aberdeen, S.D.

Augustana improved to 8-7 overall and 4-3 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, while Northern State dropped to 3-8 overall and 0-6 in the NSIC.

Northern State got off to a big start as Corbin Surat and James Marx recorded pins in the 125 and 133-pound matches. Surat pinned Augie’s Al Meger in 4:29, while Marx pinned the Vikings’ Jason Jeremiason in 4:38. In both matches, the Wolves were trailing at the time of the falls.

Meger led 4-1 after the first period. Surat then got a takedown in the second period to make the score 4-3. From there he was able to turn Meger and get the fall. Similarly, Marx trailed 2-0 after the first period. Jeremiason chose the down position to start the second period, but Marx was able to roll him over for the fall.

The Vikings regrouped and won the next four matches to take a 16-12 lead. Sid Bice got things rolling for the Vikings as he recorded a 14-4 major decision over Joseph Hirt at 141 pounds. After Mike Long won by forfeit at 149 pounds to trim NSU’s lead to 12-10, Kyle Svendsen and Marcus Edgington picked up wins to give the Vikings the lead for good at 16-12. Svendsen defeated Jacob Butrous 9-2. Svendsen got a takedown and a pair of 2-point near falls in the first period to stake himself to a 6-0 lead and cruise to the win.

Edgington, meanwhile, controlled the third period against NSU’s Jordon Larson. Leading 6-3 heading into the final period, Edgington got 2 takedowns and collected a riding time point to defeat Larson 11-5.

Northern State pulled to within 16-15 when Donnie Bowden edged Augie’s Brian Schultz 5-2 in the 174-pound match.

But Augustana put the match away at 184 and 197 pounds. Mitch Lunning rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the third period to pin Chad Gibson in 6:24. Lunning chose neutral to open the final period. He got a takedown with 1:36 left in the match to tie the score 4-4 before getting the pin a minute later. Ty Copsey then wasted little time in pinning Jeb Clay in 1:19 to put the Vikings in front 28-15.

Northern State’s Jared Little then earned a win at 285 pounds as Augustana was open.

Augustana will be in action again on Friday when the Vikings travel to Kearney, Neb., for a triangular against Nebraska-Kearney and Ft. Hays State.
