#13 Augustana Wrestlers Fall to Nationally-Ranked Opponents

The Augustana wrestling team
concluded its regular season by dropping a pair of non-conference duals
against nationally-ranked opponents Friday in Kearney, Neb. The
13th-ranked Vikings fell to No. 5 Nebraska-Kearney 25-16 and to No. 14
Fort Hays State 32-7.
Augustana, which fell to 8-9 on the season, gave defending national
champion Nebraska-Kearney all it wanted. The Vikings led after 6
matches and trailed by only 3 points, 19-16, heading into the
heavyweight match. However, the Vikings were without starter Lance
Peters, forcing 184-pounder Mitch Lunning to wrestle up two weight
classes. Lunning lost by pin to UNK’s Derek Ross.
Augie claimed three of the first four matches. Al Meger got things
started with a pin over Michael Abril in the 25-pound match. Jay Sherer
earned a 4-1 win over Cody Lambotte at 141 pounds before eigthth-ranked
Mike Long scored a 14-4 major decision over Islam Abitov. That gave the
Vikings a 13-3 lead.
But the Lopers won the next four matches to take a 19-13 lead. A key
match was at 184 pounds where UNK’s Paul Sutton edged Augustana’s Nick
Henning, ranked seventh in the country, 7-3.
The Vikings’ Ty Copsey, ranked No. 7 at 197 pounds, outlasted UNK’s
Matt Farrell, ranked No. 8 in the nation, 3-2, for Augustana’s last win
of the dual. Copsey, trailed 1-0 entering the third period but escaped
from the down position to tie the score 1-1. He then got a takedown
with 11 seconds left on the clock to go ahead 3-1 to gain the win.
Against Fort Hays State, the Vikings claimed only 2 of the 10 matches.
Copsey was impressive in scoring an 8-0 major decision win over Ben
Evans. At 133 pounds, Jason Jeremiason defeated FHSU’s Travis Kuhn 8-2.
The Vikings are now off until March 1 when they compete in the North Regional Championships in Marshall, Minn.
