SDSU falls to No. 21 Northern Iowa on Senior Night

Senior Jason Stripling won the first match of the night for the South Dakota State wrestling team
on Senior Night but No. 21 Northern Iowa rattled wins in the final nine
matches to defeat the Jackrabbits 33-3 at Frost Arena Saturday night.
Stripling started the night off with a win at heavyweight, improving
his record to 31-10 on the season. The match went scoreless through the
first two periods, but Stripling scored a reversal in the third, which
was all he needed. He would add a riding time bonus to up the final to
3-0. The win moves Stripling into a tie with former Jackrabbit Al
Holleman for 22nd all-time on the SDSU wins list with an 82-40 record.
After the Stripling win, UNI poured it on winning nine-straight matches
to end the night. The Panthers improve to 9-6 on the season at stay
perfect in the Western Wrestling Conference at 3-0. SDSU falls to
9-11-1 and winless in the conference at 0-5.
The match of the night pitted two ranked opponents at 197 pounds with
No. 13-ranked Tyler Sorenson of SDSU taking on UNI’s No. 14-ranked
Andrew Anderson. Anderson would record a takedown to Sorenson’s
reversal, making the score 2-1 after the first. Sorenson would tie
things up at 2-all in the second with an escape. In the third period,
Anderson would prove to be too much, recording a reversal and an escape
to Sorenson’s escape and a stall-warning point. The 6-5 loss marks
Sorenson’s first loss of the season and drops him to 12-1 on the year.
Two other seniors would wrestle their last matches at Frost Arena with
Alan Marvin falling in an energetic match at 125 pounds 9-7 and Justin
Retallic dropping a 10-3 decision.
The Jacks return to the mat March 7 when they travel to Greeley, Colo.,
to compete at the West Regional for a chance to represent SDSU at the
national tournament.
