FARGO, N.D. – After jumping out to a 17-3 lead, the North Dakota State
wrestling team was unable to hold on against No. 21 Northern Iowa in
front of 631 fans at the Bison Sports Arena on Sunday, Feb. 22. The

the loss, the Bison fall to 5-10-1 overall and 2-4 in the Western

as he won a 6-4 overtime battle against Cruse Aarhus at 125 pounds.
After going down 2-0 on an Aarhus takedown in the first period, Solberg
tallied a reversal just before the buzzer to end the period at 2-2.
After a scoreless second period, Solberg took a 4-2 lead with a
takedown, but Aarhus was able to escape to bring the score to 4-3 with
a second left in the period. A minute and 50 second riding time
advantage for Aarhus sent the match to overtime, where Solberg took
down Aarhus to come away with the 6-4 win.
At 133, freshman Trent Sprenkle came out and immediately tallied a
takedown for a 2-0 lead. After an escape and takedown by opponent
Steven Fitzgerald, Sprenkle reversed positions and then notched a three
point near fall in the final 30 seconds of the first period to take a
7-3 lead into the second. Sprenkle continued to dominate, tallying
three more takedowns and a three point near fall in the final two
periods en route to a 17-7 major decision victory and a 7-0 lead for
the Bison.
In his final home match for the Bison, senior 141-pounder Gabriel
Mooney went down 2-0 in the first period to Trent Washington.
Washington increased his lead to 5-0 with an escape and takedown in the
second. Mooney battled back in the third, tallying an early escape and
then a takedown with 26 seconds remaining, but ran out of time to
complete the comeback as Washington won a 6-4 decision and cut the
score to 7-3 in favor of the Bison.
Junior Ryan Adams then took the mat against Brett Robbins. After a slow
start, Adams tallied a takedown with 29 seconds left in the first.
After a Robbins escape in the second, Adams notched another takedown
for a 4-1 lead going into the third. Three takedowns in the final
period plus a 2:39 riding time advantage gave Adams the 11-3 major
decision and an 11-3 lead for the Bison.
At 157, sophomore Vince Salminen matched up with Tyson Reiner. After a
scoreless first period, Reiner took a 1-0 lead in the second on an
escape. An escape from Salminen tied the match at 1-1, but Reiner then

fall at the 6:02 mark and cut the score to 17-8.
Also competing in his final meet as a Bison, senior Adam Aho took the
mat against Jarion Beets. Beets took down Aho with 14 seconds left in
the first for a 2-0 lead. Beets increased his lead to 5-0 with an
escape and a takedown in the second. Aho notched an escape with 1:02

takedowns in the third plus a 1:04 riding time advantage to hang on for
the 10-4 decision. With the Northern Iowa victory at 165, the score was
now 17-11.
At 184, sophomore Kenny Moenkedick kept it close in the first period
against Alex Dolly, trailing only 4-2. Dolly used an escape and
takedown in the second to increase his lead to 7-3. Two more takedowns
by Dolly in the third plus a 1:45 riding time advantage gave Dolly the
12-6 decision and the Panthers closed the gap to 17-14.
Freshman Drew Ross took on No. 14 Andrew Anderson at 197 pounds.
Anderson used three first period takedowns and two second period
takedowns for an 11-4 lead going into the third. A reversal in the
third sealed the 13-5 major decision for Anderson and gave the Panthers
their first lead of the day at 18-17.
For the second match this season, the outcome rested on the shoulders
of sophomore heavyweight Tyler Hemmesch. After a scoreless first
period, UNI’s Dustin Bauman took a 1-0 lead on a second period escape.
