Six Viking Wrestlers Qualify for National Championships

Six Augustana wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships at the Super Regional No. 3 Qualifier Sunday in Marshall, Minn. Participants qualified with a fourth-place finish or better in their weight class.

The Vikings tallied three runner-up finishers on the day. At 184, Nick Henning opened the day with a pin of Dustin Nagel of MSU-Moorhead in 4:19 before winning a decision over Tyler Johnson of SMSU, 4-2, to move into the title match. In the final, Brad Padgett of St. Cloud State posted the major decision over Henning, 12-2.

At 197, Ty Copsey scored a shutout major decision over Brent Fosheim of Northern State, 9-0. Copsey won a tight 2-1 decision over Luke Munkelwitz of St. Cloud State in the semifinals before falling to Pat Mahan of Minnesota State in a 5-1 decision.

At heavyweight, Lance Peters scored a 2-0 decision over Carter Ash of SMSU before upsetting Keith McCleary of U-Mary in a 10-7 decision. However, in the title game, Brady Wilson of Minnesota State scored an early takedown and was able to get Peters pinned in 1:03.

In the 125-lbs. weight class, Al Meger earned a fourth-place finish to qualify. Meger won a 5-2 decision over Joe Werner of MSU-Moorhead before losing a 10-3 decision to Minnesota State’s Andy Forstner in the semifinals. Meger was able to score a 7-0 shutout decision over Ed Reno of SMSU to earn a place in the third-place bout, but was unable to complete the match, losing by medical forfeit.

Jay Sherer at 141 and Mike Long at 149 both earned third-place finishes to qualify. Each opened with first round byes and loses in the semifinals before winning two wrestleback matches to finish third.

Sherer lost a 3-1 decision to Gabe Suarez of St. Cloud State, but pinned Landon Dellasilve of U-Mary (3:25) and scored a 7-6 decision win over John Putman of Minnesota State for third place. Long was pinned by St. Cloud State’s Jacob Roberts in the final minute (6:16) before scoring his own pin over Upper Iowa’s Derek Stolarzyk in 4:29, and finishing his day with an 8-5 decision over David Albrecht of SMSU.

The six qualifiers will compete in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in Houston, Texas. The championships are held March 13-14.
