Moenkedick DIII National Runner-up; Season record of 35-1
March 7, 2009
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- It took 36 matches and the No.1-ranked wrestler in the nation to finally beat Concordia
sophomore Phil Moenkedick. Moenkedick lost 15-1 to Michael Wilcox of
Delaware Valley in the NCAA tile match in the 184-lb weight class in
Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Saturday. The loss is the first of the year for
Moenkedick who ends his season with a 35-1 overall record.
Moenkedick becomes the first Concordia runner-up at the NCAA National
Meet since 1983 when Cobber Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Molly McLeod
placed second. Moenkedick earns All-American honors for the first time
in his career and becomes the 12th Concordia NCAA All-American.
2008 All-American Tony Neumann goes 1-2 and was one match away from
becoming a 2009 All-American. Tony finished his career with 103 wins
tying Mike Northcut from Missoula, MT for the second most wins in a
career.
Neumann lost 7-2 in the first round to Corbin Semple (35-4) of
Waynesburg. In the wrestlebacks Tony went on to post a 7-1 decision
over Brian Scher of Hunter IN. Unfortunately his bid to repeat as an
All-American was derailed in the next round when he lost to No.7-seeded
Rob Kramer of Coe 3-2.
