NDSU defeats Air Force for first conference victory

USAFA, Colo. – The North Dakota State
wrestling team won the first six bouts of the night en route to a 23-17
victory over Air Force on Friday, Jan. 30. The Bison earn their first
Western Wrestling Conference win and snap a six-match losing streak to
improve their record to 3-7-1 (1-1 WWC). Air Force is now 3-8 and 0-2
in WWC action.
At 125 points, freshman Justin Solberg saw his first action as a
starter after battling some early season injury problems. Solberg lost
no time asserting himself on the mat, pinning Andrew Zwirlein in the
second period to give the Bison a 6-0 lead.
Freshman Trent Sprenkle moved from 125 pounds to 133 pounds tonight and
took on Derek Gillespie. After going down 4-1 in the first, Sprenkle
used two near falls in the second to take the lead and hold on it for
an 11-7 victory and a 9-0 Bison lead.
Senior Gabriel Mooney notched six takedowns en route to a 14-5 major
decision over Tyler Untrauer at 141 pounds. Junior Ryan Adams followed
up that performance with a 15-2 major decision win over Alec Williams
to give the Bison 17-0 lead.
At 157 pounds, Vince Salminen broke a six-match losing streak as he won
a 7-2 decision over Joseph Stafford. Tyler Johnson won his third
consecutive match at 165 pounds with a 7-6 decision over Stephen
Crozier.
The Falcons did not go quietly though, as they came back to win the
final four bouts of the night. Justin Shadrix pinned Adam Aho in the
174 bout and then Joshua Smith won a 10-8 decision over Kenny
Moenkedick at 184 pounds. James Ciccone won a 17-1 technical fall over
Drew Ross at 197 pounds and Stephen Larson defeated Tyler Hemmesch,
7-2.
The Bison stay on the road to take on Wyoming on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 8 p.m. in Laramie.
