Sherer and Copsey Finish Seventh at NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships

Augustana wrestlers Jay Sherer and Ty Copsey each finished in seventh place, earning All-American honors, Saturday at the NCAA Division II Championships in Houston, Texas.  In the team standings, the Vikings finished 21st with 15.5 points.

On Friday in the opening round at 141 pounds, Sherer lost a decision to Jimmy Savala of Chadron State, 10-3.  However, he was able to stay alive in the tournament, scoring a 4-3 win over Bryan Miller of N.C.-Pembroke.  In his second consolation match, Sherer scored a lead early on James Annon of Fort Hays State and won the decision, 11-5. 

In Saturday's opening round, Sherer lost a decision Ben Lockett of San Francisco State, 12-6, before winning a decision, 5-0, in the seventh place match over Cory Bloodgood of Central Missouri.

At 197, Copsey scored an escape in the third period to defeat Matthew Farrell of Nebraska-Kearney, 3-2, before falling to Keeno Griffin of Newberry College, 5-3 in the quarterfinals.  Copsey stayed alive for Saturday's action by winning a decision over Patrick Walsh of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, 5-2. 

On Saturday, Copsey lost a decision to Josh Majerus of Chadron State, 4-1, before winning by medical forfeit over Malcolm Briggs of Wisconsin-Parkside to place seventh.

Mike Long opened at 149 with a major decision over Latra Collick of Newberry College, 9-0.  Long then dropped a 4-3 decision to Chris Freije of Western State before having to forfeit to due injury in a bout with Esai Dominguez of Nebraska-Omaha.

At 184 pounds, Nick Henning won a decision over Travis Barbarick of Central Missouri, 7-2, before losing on a riding time point, 6-5, to Kyle Sand of Adams State.  Tony Gehling of Upper Iowa won a 13-4 major decision over Henning to knock Henning out of the tournament.
