St. Cloud State Wrestling Earns Academic Accolades

March 19, 2009

A total of six St. Cloud State University wrestlers gained 2008-09 Division II All-Academic Wrestling Team honors from the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association. The Huskies also earned a spot among the Division II All-Academic Wrestling Teams top 20 list in 2008-09.

Sophomore John Sundgren (Blaine), who earned a bid to the NCAA Division II championships at 157-pounds for the second consecutive season in 2008-09, was selected to the All-Academic Wrestling Team as a first team selection. He is a pre-business major at SCSU and he posted a 32-7 overall record this winter.

SCSU senior Matt Jackson (Oakdale/Cretin-Derham Hall H.S.) was earned All-Academic second team status this winter. A mathematics major, Jackson was 10-14 this winter at 141-pounds.

SCSU wrestlers named to the All-Academic Wrestling Team Honorable Mention list were freshman Adam Helgeson (Sauk Centre), junior Adam Hill (Sauk Rapids), freshman Jacob Horn (Ephrata, Wash.) and sophomore Erik Rogness (Buffalo).

In order for a student to be nominated for the Division II All-Academic Team, the student-athlete must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0, and be in their second full year at the school.

In the team standings, the Huskies ranked 19th and this marked the second consecutive season that SCSU has finished among the nation's top 20 teams. Truman State led the list with a team grade point average of 3.467, while the Huskies' team grade point average stood at 3.088 this season.

The team grade point average is calculated by averaging the cumulative grade point averages of ten wrestlers from each team of which eight of those wrestlers must have competed in their team's NCAA Division II national qualifying tournament.
