
St. Cloud State Wrestling Earns Academic Accolades

A total of six St. Cloud State University
wrestlers gained 2008-09 Division II All-Academic Wrestling Team honors
from the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association. The Huskies
also earned a spot among the Division II All-Academic Wrestling Teams
top 20 list in 2008-09.
Sophomore John Sundgren (Blaine), who earned a bid to the NCAA Division
II championships at 157-pounds for the second consecutive season in
2008-09, was selected to the All-Academic Wrestling Team as a first
team selection. He is a pre-business major at SCSU and he posted a 32-7
overall record this winter.
SCSU senior Matt Jackson (Oakdale/Cretin-Derham Hall H.S.) was earned
All-Academic second team status this winter. A mathematics major,
Jackson was 10-14 this winter at 141-pounds.
SCSU wrestlers named to the All-Academic Wrestling Team Honorable
Mention list were freshman Adam Helgeson (Sauk Centre), junior Adam
Hill (Sauk Rapids), freshman Jacob Horn (Ephrata, Wash.) and sophomore
Erik Rogness (Buffalo).
In order for a student to be nominated for the Division II All-Academic
Team, the student-athlete must have a minimum grade point average of
3.0, and be in their second full year at the school.
In the team standings, the Huskies ranked 19th and this marked the
second consecutive season that SCSU has finished among the nation's top
20 teams. Truman State led the list with a team grade point average of
3.467, while the Huskies' team grade point average stood at 3.088 this
season.
The team grade point average is calculated by averaging the cumulative
grade point averages of ten wrestlers from each team of which eight of
those wrestlers must have competed in their team's NCAA Division II
national qualifying tournament.
