
Southwest Minnesota State 2008-09 postseason awards

MARSHALL, Minn. - Southwest Minnesota State head wrestling coach Jesse Nelson has announced his team’s 2008-09 postseason awards.
Michal Barrie received the outstanding wrestler award, David Albrecht was honored with the Mustang Award, Carter Ash got the nod for freshman of the year and Wade Granger
was named most improved. The awards, voted on by members of the
team, were given out at the SMSU wrestling banquet last week.
Barrie, a senior from Westbrook, Minn., was one of two Mustang
wrestlers to qualify for this year’s NCAA Championships in Houston,
Texas. He finished the year with a 19-11 record, wrestling
primarily at 133 pounds. Barrie had four wins by fall this past
season and finished his career at SMSU with a 34-25 record.
Albrecht, a redshirt freshman from Woodbury, Minn., was the other
Mustang to make it to the NCAA Championships; he did so at 149
pounds. In his first year in an SMSU singlet, Albrecht compiled a
7-4 record. Criteria for the Mustang award that Barrie received
included dedication to the team on and off the mat and dependability to
teammates.
Ash, a freshman from Milaca, Minn., held down the heavyweight weight
class for SMSU this past season. He posted an 8-16 mark on the
season in his first campaign at the college level.
Granger, a junior from North Bend, Neb., split time between 157 pounds
and 164 pounds in 2008-09. He charted a 5-15 record, including a
win by fall.
SMSU finished the 2008-09 season 3-7 overall and 2-5 in the NSIC.
