
Mavericks Announce 2008-09 Team Awards

Junior Brady Wilson Named Most Valuable Wrestler
Mankato, Minn.- The Minnesota State wrestling team
named the recipients of its team awards at the annual Wrestling Awards
Banquet held Saturday, May 2. The 2008-09 award winners are listed
below.
Brady Wilson (Jr., 285, Fairbault, Minn.) -- Most Valuable
Wrestler and Maverick Wrestling Coaches Award (Leadership on and off
the mat) -- Wilson capped off his junior season with a 33-4 record and
his third All-American honor after placing a career-best, third-place
at the NCAA Championships. He entered nationals as the #2-ranked
wrestler in the nation after finishing first at the NCAA Super Regional
Three. Wilson was named NSIC Wrestler of the Week, Dec. 24. He owns a
110-20 career record.
Andy Forstner (So., 125, Medelia, Minn.) -- Mavericks Hardest
Worker, Most Improved Wrestler and Co-Purple Heart Award (Exhibits the
most courage) -- Forstner finished with a 30-13 record and earned his
first All-American status of his career, closing his first trip to
nationals with a sixth-place finish. He entered nationals as the
seventh-ranked wrestler in the nation after winning the NCAA Regional.
He holds a 40-17 career record.
John Putman (Sr., 141, Oak Lawn, Ill.) -- Co-Purple Heart Award
(Exhibits the most courage) -- Putman completed his senior season with
a 23-9 record and posted a 57-30 career record. He made his second NCAA
Championships appearance this season and entered the event as the #7
wrestler in the nation. Putman earned fourth-place (the highest of his
career) for his efforts in the national tournament, only losing his
first and last matches to the #1 and #2-ranked wrestlers, respectively.
His placing earned him his second All-American honor of his career.
Putman was named NSIC Wrestler of the Week, Feb. 9.
Patrick Mahan (So., 197, Owatonna, Minn.) -- Top Newcomer Award
-- Mahan completed his first season as a Maverick with a 22-11 record.
Mahan made his first trip to nationals this season, posting a 1-2
record. He entered the tournament as the #6 wrestler in the nation
after capturing the NCAA Regional title.
Tel Todd (Fr., 165, Bozeman, Mont.) -- Top Academic Performer --
Todd posted a 13-12 record in 2008-09, his first season as a Maverick.
He excelled in the classroom with a 4.0 grade point average for his
third straight semester. He is a human biology major.
The Mavericks completed the 2008-09 season with a 12-4 dual meet record
and finished third at the NCAA DII Championships. MSU finished first in
the Super Regional Three and were ranked #2 in the country heading into
the national meet. The Mavericks were crowned Northern Sun
Intercollegiate Conference champions with a perfect 7-0 record, marking
the 11th conference championship in program history. MSU also finished
third at the Cliff Keen National Dual Meet Championship.
