NDSU Wrestlers set to compete in Kaufman-Brand Open

Fargo, N.D. - The North Dakota State wrestling
team will head to Omaha, Neb. for the 27th Annual Kaufman-Brand Open on
Saturday, Nov. 21. Action begins at 9 a.m. in the Sapp Fieldhouse on
the campus of Nebraska-Omaha. Over 500 wrestlers from NCAA Division I,
II and III programs as well as NAIA and NJCAA schools will compete.
Iowa, the No. 1-ranked team in Division I leads the field. Host
Nebraska-Omaha is the top-ranked team in Division II. Last year, Ryan
Adams (149) and Gabriel Mooney (141) posted third place finishes in the
elite division. Tyler Johnson (165) was second in the amateur division.

Johnson, Moenkedick lead NDSU at Bison Open
Junior Kenny Moenkedick captured his second straight Bison Open title
at 184 pounds and sophomore Tyler Johnson won his second straight open
tournament at 165 pounds at the Bison Open on Saturday, Nov. 14.
Sophomore Trent Sprenkle reached the 125 pound final, but fell to
Minnesota’s Zach Sanders. Redshirt freshman Tyler Wells also made the
157 pound final, but lost to St. Olaf’s Justin Skillings. The Bison had
eight wrestlers finish in the top six.
Johnson off to hot start
Sophomore Tyler Johnson has started the season 7-0, winning two open
tournaments at 165 pounds. He matches his longest win streak from his
freshman year. The Bismarck, N.D. native has recorded two pins and one
technical fall. His career record is currently 26-5.
Three Bison win titles at Daktronics Open
Senior Ryan Adams, junior Vince Salminen and sophomore Tyler Johnson
all won titles at the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open on Saturday,
Nov. 7 in Brookings, S.D. Overall, eight Bison placed in the meet. At
149, Adams won two bouts by major decision and one by fall en route to
the final where he won a 9-2 decision over Easi Dominguez. At 157,
Salminen won his first two matches by fall then won both his semifinal
and final by decision. At 165, Johnson won his first bout by fall and
his quarterfinal by technical fall. He reached the final when his
opponent forfeit. In the final, he won a 7-3 decision over fellow Bison
Tyler Wells.
Maughan returns for 46th season
Head coach Bucky Maughan begins his 46th season at NDSU. He has a
career record of 448-146-13 and has won 17 conference titles and four
NCAA Division II national titles.
Kish joins coaching staff
Roger Kish, a Minnesota graduate, joined the Bison coaching staff in
September. Kish was a graduate assistant for the Gophers last year.
Kish, a LaPeer, Mich. native, was a two-time All-American and two-time
NCAA runner-up for the Gophers at 184 pounds. Fellow assistant coach
Bret Maughan is in his ninth season.
