December 11, 2009

The Augustana wrestling team flexed its muscle early and never let up as the Vikings cruised past Norhwestern 46-0 in a non-conference dual Friday night at the Elmen Center.

Making their home debut, the Vikings won 2 matches by falls, 4 matches by major decision and 2 others by forfeits in improving to 2-1 on the season. Northwestern, meanwhile, slipped to 0-2.

Al Meger and Sam Fischenich got the Vikings, ranked seventh in the nation in the latest NCAA Division II top 20 poll, off to a fast start with first-period pins. Meger, a 125-pounder, pinned Angelo Quintana in 1:44, while Fischenich pinned Pedro Ruiz in 1:53 in the 133-pound bout. That gave the hosts a quick 12-0 lead.

Augustana’s Jay Sherer, ranked No. 2 in the country at 141 pounds, easily defeated Jerod Flores by major decision 12-4 thanks to a 1:14 riding time advantage.

The Vikings’ Nate Herda scored a big win at 149 pounds when he edged Levi Price, ranked eighth in NAIA, by a 4-3 score. Herda used a takedown and a reversal to stake himself to a 4-2 lead after two periods. In the third, Price got an early escape to narrow the deficit to 4-3, but neither wrestler could get a takedown in the final 1:55.

Augustana captured the next three matches by major decisions. At 157 pounds, Marcus Edgington amassed 3:40 in riding time to roll to a 10-2 win over Nate Haplin. Gavin Nelson, ranked No. 7 at 165 pounds, followed with a dominating 18-7 victory over Brian Heiberger. Nelson had a 4:48 riding time advantage. Carl Serck, ranked eighth at 174 pounds, recorded six takedowns and recorded 2:21 of riding time to defeat David Carter 13-4.

In the other contested match, Lance Peters broke a 1-1 tie with a takedown with 43 seconds left in regulation to beat Brad Hughes 3-2. In the second period, Hughes rode Peters for 1:15 before Peters escaped for a 1-0 lead. To start the third period, Peters rode Hughes for 16 seconds before Hughes got his escape to tie the score at 1-1. That was big as it dropped Hughes’ riding time advantage to 59 seconds. Peters made it academic with his takedown, although Hughes did escape with 12 seconds left in the bout.

Augustana is now off until after the holidays. The Vikings’ next action will be January 2-3 at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis, Ind.
