Huskers out-dual Jacks at Swiftel Center
12/13/2009
The Nebraska Cornhuskers jumped out to an early 22-0 lead and cruised to a 46-6 dual victory over the South Dakota State
Jackrabbits in non-conference wrestling action held in conjunction with
the Great Plains Wrestling tournament at the Swiftel Center in
Brookings.
The bout featured only six matches with four forfeits. Nick Flynn
notched the only score for SDSU as the Huskers forfeited the 157-pound
match. SDSU forfeited 125, 149 and 184-pound classes.
"We were just outmatched by Nebraska," said head coach Jason Liles. "I
think out kids wrestled hard but we are just not as talented, but we
will continue to get better."
Nebraska entered Saturday's match as the 12th rated team by Intermat
and allowed only two takedowns and a two-point nearfall in the victory.
The 197-pound match featured two top-10 wrestlers with No. 9 Tyler
Sorenson taking on No. 2 Craig Brester. Sorenson jumped out to a 2-0
lead late in the first period but was quickly countered by a Brester
reversal moments later to tie the score at 2-2 after the first period.
Brester would take control of the match, notching two takedowns and an
escape plus a riding time point to end the scoring with an 8-2 decision.
Sorenson's record falls to 17-3 on the season and 5-2 in duals, with
all of his loses coming at the hands of the top-two ranked wrestlers in
the nation.
Battling cramps and wrestling up a weight class, Weston Blasius gave
James Nakashima a run for his money at 165 pounds. Down 5-0 entering
the second period, Blasius made things interesting scoring a takedown
seconds into the period, however, Nakashima would prove too much as he
hang on to notch a tightly contested 11-3 major decision.
Despite the loss, the Jacks continue to lead the all-time series 17-15-2 all-time.
The Jacks return to action Dec. 20 in Reno, Nev. at the Reno Tournament of Champions.
