Cyclones Slip by Gophers 19-16

January 3, 2010

Minneapolis - The Minnesota wrestling team returned to dual meet action today (Jan. 3) hosting border rival Iowa State in a the match-up of top-10 teams.

Ranked sixth in the country, Minnesota (3-2) won the first match, and held a 13-12 lead over second ranked Iowa State (3-1) with just three matches to go. The Cyclones went on two win two of the final three, though, for the 19-16 win in front of nearly 4,000 fans at the Sports Pavilion.

Starting at 174, Scott Glasser (Bismarck, N.D.) scored an upset in the opening match to give the Gophers an early 3-0 lead. Glasser came into the match fresh off a third place finish at the Southern Scuffle and the winner of seven straight, but was faced with a tall task, matched up with the 11th ranked Duke Burk. Glasser led 5-0 before Burk notched his first point with an escape just before the end of the second period. In the third period he scored another takedown and went on to win 7-2, for his eighth straight. In his last five matches, Glasser has now beaten three ranked opponents.

Kaleb Young (Tenstrike, Minn.) got his first start of the season at 184, matching up with No. 12 Jerome Ward. In a hard fought match, Young fell 4-0, as the Cyclones tied the score at 3-3.

In what was the eventual difference maker, Sonny Yohn (Alamosa, Colo.) - the 18th ranked 184-pounder in the nation - wrestled up a class at 197 and met the top-ranked and defending national champion Jake Varner. With a 12-0 record entering the meet, Varner built up an 8-0 lead late in the third period. As time ticked down to zero, it looked at is the match would end as a major decision, but with just a second left on the clock, the official signaled for the fall, awarding six points to Iowa State and a 9-3 lead.

Ben Berhow (Hayward, Minn.) won by decision in the next match, and Zach Sanders (Wabasha, Minn.) dropped a decision to close out the first half with a 12-6 lead for Iowa State.

Jayson Ness (Bloomington, Minn.) and Mike Thorn (St. Michael, Minn.) each won to start the second half, at 133 and 141 respectively. Second ranked Ness scored a 6-1 decision over fifth ranked Nick Fanthorpe, just the fourth non-fall for the now 17-0 Ness. With the score a 12-9 Cyclone advantage, Thorn tallied the Gophers only major decision of the day, with an 11-3 win over Dalton Jensen. Riding time bumped the Thorn score up to the eight-point margin, and the bonus point win to give Minnesota a 13-12 lead with three matches left.

The Gophers were not able to capitalize on the lead though, as David Zilverberg (Wayzata, Minn.) fell by a 6-3 score and Luke Mellmer (Dickinson, N.D.) fell 12-0, making the score 19-13 Iowa State heading into the final match.

The last bout of the match, may have been the most anticipated, with the No. 3 and No. 4 ranked 165-pounders squaring off. Iowa State's John Reader entered ranked third nationally, while Minnesota's Dustin Schlatter (Massillion, Ohio) was ranked fourth in the nation. While Schlatter was unable to score the fall that would have tied the match in the final standings, he did earn a well deserved decision, beating Reader 3-2. The win was the eighth straight for Schlatter, and his fourth straight over a ranked opponent.

The loss snaps a two-match winning streak in dual meets for the Gophers, and gives them a 3-2 overall record heading into the National Duals on Jan. 9 and 10.
