Bison Defeat North Carolina State, Fall to No. 14 Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. - The North Dakota State wrestling
team defeated North Carolina State, 23-16, before dropping a 33-9
decision to No. 14 Nebraska in a double dual meet in Lincoln on Sunday,
Jan. 3. The Bison are now 2-3 this season.
Juniors Andrey Patselov and Vince Salminen, along with sophomore Tyler Johnson, were all double winners on the day.
Against North Carolina State, sophomore Justin Solberg opened with a
pin of Mike Moreno at 125 pounds. After an NDSU forfeit at 133 pounds
tied the score at 6-6, senior Ryan Adams started a string of four
straight Bison victories.
Adams won a 12-3 major decision over Dale Schull at 141 pounds.
Patselov then used a late escape to capture a 7-6 win over Bobby Ward
at 149 pounds.
At 157 pounds, Salminen tallied four takedowns and two three-point near
falls en route to a 14-2 major decision win over Colton Palmer. Johnson
notched a three-point near fall with 23 seconds left in the third
period to clinch an 11-8 win over Ray Ward and give the Bison a 20-6
lead.
The Wolfpack then battled back to win the 174 and 184 pound bouts, but
sophomore Drew Ross clinced the dual win for the Bison with an 8-4
victory over Andrew Tumlin at 197 pounds.
In NDSU's match against Nebraska, the Huskers won the first three bouts
to take an early 13-0 lead. At 149 pounds, Patselov notched a takedown
with 30 seconds left in the match to steal a 10-8 win over Chris Hacker.
Salminen then notched a 6-1 win over Tyler Koehn at 157 pounds. Johnson
followed with a 6-5 win over Alex Ward at 165 pounds, thanks to a third
period takedown.
Johnson's win closed the score to 13-9, but the Huskers were able to
win the final four bouts to notch a 33-9 win over the Bison.
The Bison now travel to California to take on Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 8 and Cal Poly on Jan. 10.
