St. Cloud State Collects 37-9 Victory Over SMSU

St. Cloud, Minn. – The #9 St. Cloud State University wrestling
team improved to 9-4 on the season with a big 37-9 victory over
Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Southwest Minnesota State
University (1-2) on Saturday, Jan. 16, at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud,
Minn. The victory marked the opening of the NSIC dual meet season
for both teams.
SMSU gained its lone victory in the first match of the day with a 5-0
win by Demond Carter over SCSU’s Jake Roberts at 149-pounds. SCSU
then gained complete control of the match with a trio of falls starting
with John Sundgren’s 3:58 pin of SMSU’s Chris Hale at 157-pounds.
SCSU 165-pounder Tad Merritt continued the trend with a pinfall victory
over SMSU’s Trent Moacek at 2:13 and then Shamus O’Grady pinned SMSU’s
Micah Larson at 4:14 in the 174-pound battle.
At 184-pounds, Derek Skala brought home a well played 7-4 decision
against C.D. Johnson of SMSU. At 197-pounds, Lucas Munkelwitz
stretched the Husky lead with a 14-3 major decision over Andrew Rodas
of SMSU. SCSU’s Jake Kahnke scored a 7-4 victory over Brian Rodas
at 285-pounds to give SCSU a 27-3 lead in the match.
SCSU then iced the decision with a 4:13 pin by Trent Herold over Jordan
Bartoszek at 125-pounds. SCSU’s last win of the night went to
Shane McQuade, who picked up a 9-6 victory over Adam Jenniges of SMSU
at 133-pounds. SMSU gained its final points of the match with a
forfeit win at 141-pounds.
Next up for the Huskies will be a Jan. 22 home match against #8
Augustana at Halenbeck Hall. The action will begin at 7 p.m., and
tickets for this important battle of NSIC titans can be purchased at
the gate. On Jan. 23, SCSU will host #1 ranked Nebraska-Omaha at
2 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall. This match has been designated as
SCSU’s Alumni Day. For more information about the Alumni Day
