Panthers down Jacks 35-6

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa used extra-point
victories in four weight classes and a pin to cruise past the South Dakota State wrestling team 35-6 in Western Wrestling Conference action Saturday night at the West Gym in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The loss drops the Jacks to 1-7-1 overall, 0-1 in the conference, while
the Panthers improve to 6-8 overall, 2-0 in conference duals.
The Panthers jumped out to a 9-0 lead before Dustin Walraven's
third-period heroics put the Jacks on the board at 141 pounds. Down 4-1
entering the third period to UNI's Charlie Ettelson, Walraven scored
two takedowns to Ellelson's two escapes to whittle the lead to 6-5.
With 15 seconds remaining in the match, Ellelson recorded an escape
before Walraven earned a stalling point and struck the final blow on a
takedown with one second remaining to earn a come-from-behind 8-7
victory. The win improves Walraven's record to 17-9 overall.
At 197 pounds, Tyler Sorenson scored a 7-4 victory over Dustin Bauman.
Leading 5-1 after the first, Sorenson added a takedown and a stall
point to round out his scoring. The victory improves his team-leading
record to 20-5 on the season.
At heavyweight, Kevin Kelly gave a highly regarded Christian Brantley a
run for his money, but fell in a tightly contested match 5-4. Kelly led
entering the third period 4-3 but Brantley added an escape and a
riding-time point to squeak through with the victory.
The Jack return home for their home conference opener against Air Force on Saturday at 7 p.m.
