Augustana Caps Home Schedule with 34-3 Win over Northern State

The Augustana wrestling
team capped the home portion of its schedule with a dominatng 34-3
victory over Northern State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference
action Saturday afternoon at the Elmen Center.
The 10th-ranked Vikings improved to 9-4 overall and remained perfect in
NSIC competition with a 5-0 record. NSU, meanwhile, fell to 2-3 overall
and 1-2 in the NSIC.
Augustana won 9 of the 10 matches, including the first 8 of the dual.
Carl Serck recorded the only pin of the afternoon. A 174-pounder, Serck
opened the dual by pinning Phillip Downs in 4:07.
The Vikings captured the next 3 matches by decision. The 184-pound bout
featured two of the top wrestlers in the region. Augustana’s Nick
Henning built an 8-2 lead in the second period before hanging on for a
10-7 victory.
After No. 2 Ty Copsey defeated Matt Mueleners 7-2 in the 197-pound
battle, Augustana’s Lance Peters earned a big 3-1 win over Jared Little
in the 285-pound bout. Each wrestler scored an escape from the down
position to make the score 1-1. With 25 seconds left in regulation,
Peters, who was at a size disadvantage, managed to take down Little for
the winning score.
At 125 pounds, Al Meger used a 3-point near fall and a 2-point near
fall in the first period to build a 7-0 lead en route to a 9-1 major
decision win over Jimmy Marx.
Laramie Shaffer followed with a 19-4 technical fall over Jacob Butrous
in the 133-pound contest. Shaffer recorded four 2-point near falls in
the bout. He also amassed 5:04 riding time.
At 141 pounds, Augie’s Jay Sherer used 2 takedowns and a 3-point near
fall to earn a 10-2 major decision over Benton Crow. The Vikings’ Chism
Fink followed with a 6-1 decision over Beau Voegeli.
Northern State picked up its only win of the dual at 157 pounds, where
Ryan Larsen edged Kyle Svendsen 7-5. Augustana’s Gavin Nelson wrapped
up the dual with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Donnie Bowden. Following a
scoreless first period, Nelson rode out Bowden in the second period.
Nelson then got an escape 3 seconds into the third period to take a 1-0
lead. Bowden managed to get a takedown with 18 seconds left to lead
2-1, but Nelson escaped 2 seconds later to knot up the score 2-2.
Nelson finished with a 1:53 riding time advantage to earn the winning
point.
Augustana has 2 duals on the schedule next week. On Thursday, the
Vikings travel to Dakota Wesleyan for a 7 p.m. dual. Then on Sunday,
Augustana visits Fayette, Iowa, for a dual against sixth-ranked Upper
Iowa in a battle of the NSIC’s unbeaten teams. That dual begins at 2
p.m.
