NDSU Defeats Air Force, 26-18, for Sixth Straight Win

FARGO, N.D. - The North Dakota State wrestling
team won its sixth straight dual on Sunday, defeating Air Force, 26-18.
The Bison improve to 9-4 overall and 2-0 in the Western Wrestling
Conference. NDSU claimed six of the ten bouts in the victory with two
wins coming by fall and two by major decision.
Sophomore Justin Solberg kicked things off with a hard-fought 9-8
decision over Andrew Zwirlein at 125 pounds. Down 7-6 in the waning
seconds of the third period, Solberg notched a takedown with nine
seconds left in the match to claim the win.
After an NDSU forfeit at 133 pounds, senior Ryan Adams took on No. 16
Cole VonOhlen at 141 pounds. The duo had met once this season with
Adams claiming a 1-0 victory. VonOhlen got the best of Adams in today's
dual after using a minute and 37 seconds of riding time to take a 3-2
win.
Junior Andrey Patselov then began a run of three-straight Bison
victories. Patselov tallied six takedowns and a reversal in a 15-6
major decision win over Gabe Martinez at 149 pounds.
After jumping out to a huge lead, junior Vince Salminen wore down Wade
Stowe and pinned him in 5:49 at 157 pounds to give the Bison a 13-9
lead in the match.
Sophomore Tyler Johnson used two near falls in the first period and
four takedowns to claim a dominating 15-2 win over Joseph Stafford at
165 pounds.
Air Force closed the gap to 17-15 when Tyler French pinned redshirt freshman Mac Stoll in 6:21 at 174 pounds.
With a narrow 6-4 lead going into the third period of the 184 pound
bout, junior Kenny Moenkedick took down James Ciccone and pinned him
only four seconds later. Moenkedick's win gave the Bison a 23-15 lead.
After a scoreless first period at 197 pounds, sophomore Drew Ross
turned it on the final period. After an early escape, Ross took down
Neil Delaney and was able to ride out the remaining time. Ross' win
secured the match victory for the Bison.
Heavyweight freshman Joe Arthur lost a 5-0 decision to Stephen Larson to close out the match.
The Bison return to the Bison Sports Arena for a clash with fellow
conference unbeaten Wyoming on Sunday, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. The Cowboys are
3-0 in the Western Wrestling Conference after wins over Utah Valley and
Northern Iowa Saturday.
