Vikings Win Conference Finale over MSU-Moorhead

The Augustana wrestling team won its final conference dual of the season, downing Minnesota State Moorhead 28-9 Thursday in Moorhead, Minn.

The Vikings improved to 11-5 overall, including 5-2 in true road duals, and 6-1 in NSIC matchups. MSU Moorhead fell to 4-10 on the season. The Vikings won the first six matches to post a 20-0 advantage.

Laramie Shaffer improved to 9-3 at 133 pounds, scoring a 15-0 shutout technical fall over Evan Forde. Shaffer scored a takedown 19 seconds into the match and scored four 2-point near falls in the first period to take a 10-0 lead into second period. In the second, Shaffer scored a takedown and 2-point near fall before escaping in the third period to end the match at the 5:19 mark.

Augie tallied two major decisions. Ty Copsey posted a 13-2 major decision over Jon Swart at 197 pounds, while Nick Henning scored a 15-2 major win over Tayler Yliniemi in the 184-pound match.

At 125 pounds, Al Meger won a tight 3-2 decision over Corey Ulmer. Down 2-0 after the first period, Meger chose down, got the escape, and scored a takedown with six seconds remaining in the period for a 3-2 lead. Ulmer chose down to start the third period, and Meger was able to keep him from escaping for the 3-2 decision.

Jay Sherer also posted a one-point victory at 141 pounds. Trailing Brady Schneeberger 4-2 with 1:20 remaining, Sherer was able to takedown Schneeberger and not allow him to escape the rest of the period. With 1:39 riding time, Sherer scored the riding time point for the 5-4 decision.

Three other Vikings posted decision victories, including Nate Herda at 149 pounds, Marcus Edgington at 157 pounds and Gavin Nelson at 165 pounds. MSU Moorhead’s Jarret Hall won a 7-4 decision over Carl Serck at 174 pounds, and the Dragons’ Tim Johnson pinned Lance Peters in 54 seconds in the heavyweight bout.

Augustana next travels to Omaha, Neb., for its final dual of the season. The Vikings will face #1 Nebraska-Omaha Wednesday with the first match slated for 7 p.m.
