Southwest Minnesota State Prevails in Home Opener

MARSHALL, Minn. - Southwest Minnesota State
picked up victories in six of 10 bouts to top the University of Mary
25-15 in the Mustangs' home opener Saturday afternoon in Marshall.
SMSU improves to 4-4 (1-4 NSIC), while drops to U-Mary 2-10 (0-6 NSIC).
The win earns SMSU its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference
victory of the season and gives the Mustangs their most wins since the
2005-06 season.
The win also gives head coach Jesse Nelson the most in his three-year tenure at SMSU.
U-Mary struck first as the Marauders' Matt Garcia posted a 5-2 decision over SMSU's Robert Morris at 125 pounds.
The Mustangs would go on to win the next three bouts to take a commanding lead.
At 133 pounds, A.J. Jenniges charted a 10-0 major decision over Cody
Schmidt, while Brandan Schunk was a 10-3 winner over Tanner Beaman at
141 pounds. The Marauders left 149 pounds open.
Demond Carter and Trent Molacek fell in their ensuing bouts before SMSU
added another six points after U-Mary left 174 pounds open.
C.D. Johnson won his 184-pound bout, taking a 6-2 decision from Brady
Anderson, and Brian Rodas finished the dual by recording a 6-2 victory
over Kriss McCleary at 285 pounds.
The Mustangs will stay at home next weekend, hosting Northern State and Minnesota State, Manakto.
